Guerilla Games is holding a second closed beta for Horizon Hunters Gathering, giving a limited number of players another chance to try the game. The beta will run from May 22nd to May 25th, 2026, and is open to players on both PlayStation 5 and PC through the PlayStation Beta Program. While not everyone who signs up will be chosen, more players are expected to participate in this beta than in the very small first test.
Since it was first revealed in February 2026, Horizon Hunters Gathering has generated a lot of excitement and questions from players. The game is designed as a cooperative online experience where three players team up to hunt robotic creatures. Its gameplay – building unique character setups, overcoming difficult boss battles, and utilizing characters with special skills – is similar to games like Elden Ring Nightreign. This creates a compelling cycle of challenges and rewards in the Horizon universe.
Despite taking inspiration from other games, this one offers a lot of unique features and modes. Early testing showed a compelling story that felt almost like a shared adventure you could play with friends. Expanded Story Content Will Be Told Through The Introduction Of Two New Characters

The story of Horizon Hunters Gathering will expand with two new characters: Ensa and Shadow. Both have special ties to the Horizon world and offer unique ways to play, working well with other characters on your team. Shadow is a Carja operative who controls a powerful Stalker machine, suggesting their abilities will focus on boosting that machine. Ensa, a charming Oseram smuggler with a history as a mercenary, will likely have a playstyle that matches her background.
These characters will appear in a new playable Episode, which is a smaller part of the game’s main story. These Episodes will explore the backgrounds of the new hunters and also connect to the larger story of Horizon Hunters Gathering. By adding new mysteries and motivations, these Episodes aim to deepen players’ connection to the game beyond the core gameplay, building excitement for the full release and its complete story.
Refined Gameplay Changes Almost Make This An Early Access Period For Horizon Hunters Gathering

The second playtest of Horizon Hunters Gathering includes significant gameplay changes across several modes. The Machine Incursion survival mode now has extra difficulty levels for players who found the first beta too easy. The Cauldron Descent mode is also receiving new difficulties, featuring unique challenges and modifiers designed to test even experienced players from the initial playtest.
Players can now explore a new area called “Breaker’s Bounty” in all game modes. It’s a wild place with thick jungles, crumbling ruins, and a dangerous desert filled with new machine enemies. A major addition in this latest test is the ability for solo players to team up with computer-controlled allies. These allies will fill empty spaces on co-op teams, making battles more manageable, and ensuring that even those playing alone have help when discovering Breaker’s Bounty.
As a big fan, it feels like this spin-off is getting a really unique development process! They’re doing a lot of playtests with major updates, and honestly, each one feels like we’re getting an extended early look at the game. It’s awesome that they’re still actively working on Horizon Hunters Gathering throughout 2026 – it shows they’re really committed to making it polished and amazing by the time it officially comes out. It gives me a lot of hope for the final product!
