Fans of Marvel can anticipate a less flamboyant portrayal of Gambit, played by Channing Tatum, in the upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday.
Five years after my hopes for a standalone Gambit film dissolved in 2019, I thought my chance to embody the Ragin’ Cajun in an X-Men movie had passed me by. Yet, unexpectedly, Ryan Reynolds reached out to me with an offer: to portray a unique version of Gambit alongside Deadpool and Wolverine. In 2024, I stepped into the role, and the global audience embraced my take on the superhero mutant, finding it charming and captivating. This warm reception paved the way for me to join the Doomsday cast in Marvel’s cinematic universe.
How will Channing Tatum’s Gambit be different in Avengers: Doomsday?
Although many fans adore the character of Gambit portrayed by Tatum in movies like Deadpool and Wolverine, there were some doubts about how comedic the actor’s take on the mutant was. A running gag in these films was that Deadpool struggled to comprehend anything the Ragin’ Cajun said. However, Tatum has alleviated these concerns with his latest statements to Variety for his new film Roofman. He confirmed that the Gambit character in Doomsday will be much less flamboyant and more serious.
In simpler terms, Tatum shared that Marvel’s executives needed some time to grasp the character’s Cajun accent and ensure the audience would understand him. The actor clarified that while he didn’t intend to give a full-blown Cajun portrayal in Doomsday, he also aimed to avoid making Gambit too comedic like Deadpool. However, the directors wanted to maintain a balance between humor and drama, while ensuring that when Gambit gets serious or removes his Mardi Gras mask, the situations become meaningful.
In the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, Remy LeBeau/Gambit, portrayed by Tatum, is one of eight mutants confirmed to appear. Joining him are Namor played by Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Hank McCoy/Beast acted by Kelsey Grammer, Charles Xavier/Professor X played by Patrick Stewart, Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto interpreted by Ian McKellen, Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler enacted by Alan Cumming, Raven Darkhölme/Mystique portrayed by Rebecca Romijn, and Scott Summers/Cyclops reprised by James Marsden. These last six characters have previously played their roles in the X-Men series produced by 20th Century Fox.
Since April 2025, Avengers: Doomsday has been under development, with the Russo Brothers directing. This much-awaited sequel is slated to premiere in theaters on December 18, 2026, as part of Phase 6 within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
