How Derek Hough & Wife Hayley Erbert Plan to Tour With a Newborn

Derek Hough is getting ready for a new kind of dance break.

With the arrival of their first child on the way, Dancing With the Stars judge Derek Hough and his wife, Hayley Erbert, are also preparing for their upcoming tour, Derek Hough Symphony of Dance: Encore, which begins in June.

Though he had his reservations about going on tour so soon after baby.

He told TopMob News that he honestly didn’t know what to do. He admitted he was questioning whether or not to go on tour, unsure of how it would affect him emotionally and personally. He worried about how the experience might change his perspective on life and impact his family.

After Hayley had brain surgery for a hematoma two years ago, performing together has become even more meaningful for the pair.

Derek explained that, much like her initial recovery, she had a strong purpose – something to strive for. He believes this focus was key to her healing and that she’s approaching this new challenge with the same determined mindset.

Okay, so my husband Derek and I are figuring out this whole ‘touring with a baby’ thing, and honestly, we’re really trying to take the pressure off. We’re 40 and 31, and it’s a learning curve! We’re just focusing on finding what works for us and the little one as we go.

The professional athlete said they’re taking a cautious approach, evaluating things as they progress and prioritizing what feels right. They emphasized that health and family are the most important things.

My favorite couple didn’t just decide to tour on a whim! They really valued the advice of their Dancing with the Stars family – Val Chmerkovskiy, Jenna Johnson, Pasha Pashkov, and Daniella Karagach – because all of them have successfully juggled their careers with raising kids. It was important to them to get their input and learn from those who’ve been there.

I always love getting feedback, and recently I was chatting with people after they tried something new. I asked them what they thought, really wanting to know about their experience. You know what they said? Simply, ‘It is fantastic!’ It’s moments like that – hearing pure, unadulterated enjoyment – that make my job so rewarding.

He remembered being told that when traveling with others, you should give them your full attention during the day, take care of them until bedtime, and then pursue your own passions and purpose.

And for Derek, that’s dance. And now, he gets to share that with the next generation.

Oh my gosh, Derek said it himself! He’s SO thrilled to become a dad, and you can just feel how happy he is! But what I love even more is that he and his partner are still totally dedicated to performing – they’re not going to give that up, and honestly, that makes me even more excited for everything to come! It’s just… perfect!

Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert first met in 2014 while performing together on a tour with Derek and his sister, Julianne Hough. A producer from Dancing With the Stars was impressed with Hayley and invited her to audition for the show’s dance troupe. She was hired the following year, and she and Derek began dating in 2015, according to the Hutchinson News.

They started attending events together, even appearing at the 2016 premiere of the Netflix documentary I Am Not Your Guru, featuring Tony Robbins.

I was so thrilled for Derek when he got nominated for an Emmy for his choreography on Dancing With the Stars! And even more excited that he brought Hayley as his date to the Creative Arts Emmys. They looked amazing together, and it was such a special night cheering him on.

Hayley had emergency brain surgery after a blood vessel burst, and Derek was with her throughout it all. Over a week later, he shared on Instagram that the experience was terrifying, going from the excitement of performing onstage to a sudden crisis. He described her recovery as miraculous.

Hayley and Derek were able to restart their Symphony of Dance tour in April 2024 after receiving medical approval. In October, Hayley made a heartwarming return to dancing, performing an emotional routine with her husband to Benson Boone’s song, “Beautiful Things.”

The couple is thrilled to announce they are expecting their first child! They shared the happy news on Instagram with a video of their baby’s sonogram, and Hayley expressed their excitement, saying, “We can’t believe something so small could bring us so much joy.”
