Hacks has taken its final bow. 

The popular series, starring Jean Smart as Deborah Vance and Hannah Einbinder as Ava Daniels, concluded on May 28th after five seasons of exploring their complicated, funny, and ultimately touching relationship. The finale was a fitting end to the Emmy-winning show.

The episode started with Ava filming the pilot for her new comedy and Deborah launching her casino, but the tone quickly changed when Deborah shared the devastating news that she’s been diagnosed with cancer, and it has spread.

Instead of getting help, she tells Ava she’s planning to go to a clinic in Europe to end her life. Throughout the episode, Ava tries her best – with a lot of emotion – to convince her friend and former boss to reconsider.

Honestly, watching Deborah and Ava go back and forth is always a highlight! This time, their usual playful arguing actually sets up the biggest surprise of the episode. They were literally about to get on the train to the place where they’d get help, but then Deborah suddenly had a change of heart. She realized that, believe it or not, Ava actually improves her jokes, and she couldn’t leave that behind!

Deborah said to her outside the train station, ‘I might not have much time left, but I think I can manage another hour. Could you help me write something?’

Following Ava’s agreement to assist with her upcoming comedy show, the scene shifts to Las Vegas where Judy Garland and her daughter, Liza Minnelli, are depicted performing a blended version of the songs “Get Happy” and “Happy Days Are Here Again.”

Jimmy and Kayla also made sure Paul W. Downs and Megan Stalter were taken care of, convincing her dad to let them take over Latitude Management.

The final episode of the HBO Max series provided a satisfying and emotional conclusion for viewers, and the entire season seemed to deliver what fans were hoping for. Notably, after Ava joined Deborah’s team as a writer in the first season—despite Deborah’s initial manipulation—fans widely created online stories imagining a romantic relationship developing between the two women.

Lucia Aniello, Jen Statsky, and Paul, the creators of the show, wrote an episode featuring a kiss between Deborah and Ava. The two pretended to be a couple during a trip with Leslie Bibb and Cherry Jones.

Hannah told USA Today in an interview on May 7th that she found a recent event very funny. She praised how it was handled, saying it felt true to the characters and still gave fans what they were hoping for.

Throughout the season, Megan became known for her memorable and cutting remarks, including a particularly blunt comment to a well-known actress: “You’re a terrible actress, and even a dead person could give a better performance!”

The show also featured fantastic guest appearances by Jesse McCartney, Christopher Briney, Billy Baldwin, Trisha Paytas, Ann Dowd, and the legendary Bob Mackie.

The show’s actors have often talked about how much fun they had working together over the past six years. However, Hannah, who won an Emmy last year for her supporting role, has shared how challenging it was to say goodbye to the series.

Hannah recently told USA Today that she got sick while filming her last scenes. She described feeling suddenly ill as soon as she finished shooting, saying she doubled over and felt her body giving out.

The connection she made with Jean helped her get through everything. She described Jean as a genuinely warm and caring person who makes everyone around her feel loved.

Jean feels the same way about Hannah, saying she’s always been someone she could rely on. Jean also appreciates that Hannah is always honest.
