Stanley Kubrick’s last movie, titled “Eyes Wide Shut,” holds the distinction of being filmed over an extended period of 400 days. At that time, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, who were still married, starred in this production boasting a stellar cast. Interestingly, John Turturro was initially offered a role specifically written for him in the film, but he declined Kubrick’s offer.
As a dedicated film enthusiast, I recall when Turturro shared, “Stanley Kubrick unexpectedly reached out to me for Eyes Wide Shut, and I was flabbergasted that he had such insight into my career.” He continued, “He said, ‘I believe you’re an exceptional actor,’ to which I responded, ‘Thank you.’ He countered, ‘Well, you truly are.'”
Intrigued, I confessed, “Well, I can’t casually mention that to my wife around the house or she might whack me with a frying pan.” To which he replied, “I’ll be sending over a script and I hope you find it appealing.” He assured me, “You will like it.
Kubrick was curious about when it would work out for Turturro, as he was both preparing and seeking financing for a movie he planned to direct.
Turturro shared that the individual commented, “I penned this role specifically for you.” Instead of immediately agreeing, he didn’t promise to take it. However, his enthusiasm got the best of him. He replied, “I’ll give it a read and we can figure it out together.” Conversing with the person in a casual manner.
In essence, Turturro admitted that things didn’t pan out since he failed to communicate his commitment to the project to Kubrick. He suspects that Kubrick may not have been convinced about his enthusiasm for the role, leading him to say, “The next day, I was informed I wasn’t available because I hadn’t said ‘No matter what.’ That was it, and at the time, I didn’t realize this, and I just tried to be ordinary. So I would have liked to have worked with him, given my admiration for his work and curiousity about how I might fare during extended takes.
It transpired that Nick Nightingale, the pianist who was portrayed by actor-cum-director Todd Field in the movie, provided the crucial password to Tom Cruise’s character, Dr. Bill Harford. Unfortunately, he met a tragic end after disclosing this password.
