I’m hearing that Netflix is really committed to their upcoming project with Quentin Tarantino. They’re putting a lot of resources into it, and it sounds like they’re letting him have a lot of creative control. I’m excited to see what they come up with together!
This summer, fans can look forward to The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a follow-up to Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt reprising his role as Cliff Booth, the movie takes place in 1970s Hollywood as Booth takes on a new stuntman job. The cast also includes Timothy Olyphant, Carla Gugino, Elizabeth Debicki, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. However, it seems Cliff Booth will face significant challenges in his new role.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie starred in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, a film made with a $90 million budget that earned $377 million worldwide and received 10 Oscar nominations. However, reports indicate that the upcoming film, The Adventures of Cliff Booth, cost around $200 million to produce.
A recent report reveals that the movie’s biggest stars and key creative team make up a large portion of its budget. According to Puck, Brad Pitt is earning $40 million for his roles as both the lead actor and a producer, director David Fincher is receiving $20 million, and writer-producer Quentin Tarantino was paid over $20 million for the rights to adapt his script for this one film.
Other major stars working on the film likely earned high salaries, though probably not as much as $40 million. Typically, a movie costing $200 million to make needs to earn around $500 million at the box office to be considered successful. Recently, several well-received and popular films have failed financially due to excessive budgets—for example, despite winning Best Picture in 2026, One Battle After Another wasn’t profitable.
The success of The Adventures of Cliff Booth shouldn’t be judged by how well it does in theaters. Netflix will give it a limited theatrical release to qualify it for awards, but most of its revenue will come from streaming. Cliff Booth is expected to perform well on Netflix, as films with popular actors often do once they become available on the platform.
It’s still uncertain if Netflix will earn the high praise it’s probably aiming for with this new venture. Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was a major success, helping launch Margot Robbie to stardom and cementing Brad Pitt’s reputation, culminating in his Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
Despite being a well-made film, The Adventures of Cliff Booth feels like it wasn’t really needed. Audiences are also uncertain about what to expect now that David Fincher – the director behind films like The Social Network, Gone Girl, Seven, and Zodiac – is taking over from Quentin Tarantino, as Fincher’s filmmaking style is quite different.
The Adventures of Cliff Booth will release in theaters and on Netflix in August 2026.
