The popular Cartoon Network series Regular Show ended in 2017, but fans still love it. Now, nearly ten years later, the show is coming back with a spin-off called Regular Show: The Lost Tapes. The ending of the original series showed an older Mordecai and Rigby with families, and the final scenes might hint at what this new spin-off will be about and which time periods it will cover.
The final episode of Regular Show featured a sad moment for fans: the death of Pops, a character who had been with the show since the beginning. He sacrificed himself to defeat his evil twin, Anti-Pops. After returning to Earth from their space adventure, the park crew grieved the loss of their friend. In a touching afterlife scene, Pops is shown in heaven watching a Regular Show VHS tape, suggesting future episodes will become part of his viewing experience. It’s safe to assume these “tapes” will show the ongoing adventures of Mordecai and Rigby, even after Pops is gone.
The Lost Tapes Are About to be Played

The first previews for Regular Show: The Lost Tapes show Mordecai and Rigby just as we remember them from the original series: working at the park, enjoying themselves, and driving their golf cart. These new episodes will likely feature adventures that happened during the same time period as the first eight seasons, but weren’t shown on screen. It’s also possible the show could explore storylines set in the future, though.
The original series finale showed Pops observing Mordecai and Rigby in their later years, and it seemed to end when the whole group reunited at the park. This reminds us of the recent Beavis and Butt-Head revival, which jumped between the present and future. That series, from Paramount, offers a good model for what Regular Show: The Lost Tapes could achieve. The spin-off could alternate between the characters we know and explore what their lives are like with families after leaving the park – a concept that has proven successful before. Set to premiere on Cartoon Network on May 11th, the new series has a lot of potential, especially considering fans haven’t seen these characters in almost ten years.
