Looking back at Captain Benjamin Sisko from Star Trek in 2026 is quite fascinating. The beloved character from Deep Space Nine has been absent from the show for nearly 30 years – his storyline concluded with him embarking on a new journey as the Emissary to the Prophets. However, his popularity has continued to grow. It’s ironic that Sisko’s story initially received a mixed reaction, even dividing some viewers with its forward-thinking themes and unique approach, considering how new Star Trek shows are often met with both enthusiastic support and negative criticism. But ultimately, those initial challenges seem to have contributed to his enduring legacy.
A continuation of Benjamin Sisko’s story after Deep Space Nine, focusing on his experiences with the alien Prophets, is highly unlikely. Avery Brooks, the actor who played Sisko, stopped acting around 2013, and Star Trek’s writers never seemed eager to solve the mystery of what Sisko learned from the Prophets. However, Starfleet Academy recently established that Sisko didn’t return to the normal timeline (at least by the 32nd century) and cleverly brought the character back through an episode dedicated to his story – and we now have official details on how it happened.
Benjamin Sisko Returns (Briefly) In Starfleet Academy

The episode ‘Series Acclimation Mil’ feels like a test case for a new direction, focusing on SAM as she tries to fulfill her purpose for the enigmatic AI she serves. However, it’s also a clear tribute to the lasting impact of Captain Sisko. Both characters are emissaries, and through the mystery surrounding Sisko’s fate, SAM unexpectedly discovers a stronger sense of self. This is a strong narrative choice, although the episode does include some awkward attempts to appeal to a younger audience. Importantly, Avery Brooks makes a brief vocal appearance at the end, delivering a final, poignant message about the essence of life: love. His unmistakable voice closes the episode with a unique monologue never before heard in Star Trek.
Spiritual truths are actually quite simple, but it takes a long time to truly grasp them. Only love has the capacity to fully understand and interpret their meaning.
The episode ends on a moving note, serving as a heartfelt tribute to Benjamin Sisko. It’s bittersweet that this is the closest we’ll get to seeing him return, similar to the legacy appearances of characters like Picard and Janeway. I confirmed with the team behind Starfleet Academy that the monologue used in the episode wasn’t originally from Star Trek. Instead, Paramount licensed a spoken word piece by Avery Brooks, with his permission, from his 2007 album ‘Here,’ which he described as containing songs reflecting his respect for his own father and the artists who inspired him. It’s a beautiful touch that the episode used a quote about fatherhood from an album dedicated to his father, especially considering the episode’s focus on Sisko’s role as a father.
Starfleet Academy’s Latest Episode is a Perfect Tribute to Sisko

The episode is essentially a heartfelt homage to Avery Brooks and his famous character, Benjamin Sisko. Beyond a brief voice appearance by Sisko, the entire story revolves around SAM trying to uncover what happened to him. The episode ends with a “Thank you, Avery” message on screen, accompanied by the classic Deep Space Nine theme song. It’s safe to say this will inspire many fans to revisit the series – and even spark some online discussion, perhaps even from those claiming otherwise.
The Sisko Museum is filled with meaningful objects from his life. You’ll find the baseball given to him by a Buck Bokai impersonator – a keepsake he displayed with a catcher’s mitt – along with the Orb of the Prophets. There’s even a typewriter, a subtle nod to the powerful episode ‘Far Beyond the Stars,’ which actor Avery Brooks also directed and starred in as a 1950s science fiction writer facing racism. That episode remains incredibly important, making the recent criticism of newer Star Trek shows as being “too politically correct” seem particularly absurd.
Honestly, the Starfleet Academy episode really felt like everything this season has been building towards – a blend of what we love about Star Trek and some fresh ideas. It hasn’t been perfect, and I’ll admit I haven’t enjoyed every moment, but ‘Series Acclimation Mil’ was definitely my favorite. As a huge Deep Space Nine fan, it really hit home. We don’t get a complete resolution to Sisko’s story, but it does give us a sense of peace knowing he never made it back to his family.
