The Star Wars series, Picard, received a mixed reaction, and didn’t quite live up to Paramount’s expectations with critics and fans. Still, it was great to see Patrick Stewart reprise his role as Jean-Luc Picard, and the show ran for three seasons, telling a complete story. Filming seasons two and three consecutively was challenging for Stewart, especially considering he was 81 years old at the time and began to feel the strain. However, a special episode reuniting the cast of the beloved Star Trek: The Next Generation seemed to give him a boost.
The new podcast, Dropping Names with Brent and Jonny, launched with a conversation between actors Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner and their Star Trek: The Next Generation co-star, LeVar Burton. They reminisced about their time working together and what they’ve been up to since, including their appearance together in the third season of Star Trek: Picard.
You know, something I really appreciated about being on that set was seeing how it affected Patrick. He was completely spent, honestly. He’d been working non-stop, this was his second series back-to-back, and it was really taking a toll. He was just utterly exhausted – there was no question about it. He was completely wiped out.
It was amazing to hear Jonathan Frakes share that Patrick Stewart was genuinely happy we were all part of the episode. He even said it felt good to be back in the captain’s chair as Jean-Luc Picard! LeVar Burton totally agreed, saying he could see how much it revitalized Sir Patrick. We all kept commenting on how incredible the set was – it was a perfect recreation of the Next Generation bridge. Honestly, it was like stepping back in time! Everything, from the carpet color to the chairs and even the angle of the ramp to Michael Dorn’s station, was exactly as we remembered it.
“The Last Generation” Remains the Best Picard Episode
Patrick Stewart, known for his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, was joined by several original cast members in an episode of Star Trek: Picard called “The Last Generation.” Jonathan Frakes played Commander Riker, LeVar Burton was Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge, and Brent Spiner played Lt. Commander Data. Michael Dorn as Worf, Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi, and Gates McFadden as Beverly Crusher also appeared, and many fans consider their reunion in this episode to be the highlight of the entire Star Trek: Picard series.
Patrick Stewart was initially hesitant about a reunion, wanting to explore a different stage in his character’s life and avoid simply repeating past work. He later admitted he was glad others convinced him to do it, as it created a wonderful moment for the original crew to reunite. Ultimately, it proved to be a satisfying conclusion for both the Picard series and the Next Generation crew.
