Released 25 years ago, Ron Howard’s film How the Grinch Stole Christmas wasn’t a critical darling, but it was a big hit with audiences. The movie, which was inspired by the classic Dr. Seuss book, featured Jim Carrey, Christine Baranski, Jeffrey Tambor, Molly Shannon, Bill Irwin, and a young Taylor Momsen in her first film role as Cindy Lou Who.
During an interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Taylor Momsen talked about her experience filming How The Grinch Stole Christmas when she was just seven years old. She said she has only positive memories of the movie, describing it as a wonderful and fun experience. “I don’t have any bad memories with Grinch. Everything about it was awesome,” Momsen explained.
Even though the actress was very young, she recognized How The Grinch Stole Christmas as an amazing and high-profile project, especially at her age. She was grateful for the chance to observe talented actors like Jim Carrey and Molly Shannon, and to work with director Ron Howard.
Interestingly, making the movie allowed her to record the song “Where Are You, Christmas?” Jamie Lynn Momsen, who has since left acting to focus on her band The Pretty Reckless, shared that this was actually her very first time recording in a professional studio.
Although Taylor Momsen has fond memories of making the film, she found it difficult growing up because of its impact. She explained, “When the movie came out, I was constantly teased at school – everyone called me ‘the Grinch girl.’ I also moved around a lot as a kid, and all of that was tough to deal with.”
She explained that with time and reflection, she realized all the experiences she had making the film were actually wonderful. She questioned why she’d been distancing herself from that part of her life, ultimately embracing her identity as Cindy Lou Who, stating she still felt connected to that character and those experiences.
Taylor Momsen, known for her role in How The Grinch Stole Christmas, recently revisited her holiday song “Where Are You, Christmas?” She released a new version that combines her original vocals from when she was a child with her current singing. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the film, she and her band, The Pretty Reckless, also released a music video featuring old footage of her from around the time the movie came out.
Dakota Fanning, who played Cindy Lou Who in ‘How The Grinch Stole Christmas,’ has been reflecting on her role as a child actor. This comes as the movie experiences a surge in popularity, especially after Fanning recently met with Jim Carrey, who hinted he might be open to making another film. Even if a sequel doesn’t happen, ‘How The Grinch Stole Christmas’ continues to be a beloved holiday tradition, largely thanks to Fanning’s charming performance and Carrey’s energetic portrayal of the Grinch.
