How The Grinch Stole Christmas Incident With 7-Year-Old Star “Freaked Out” Jim Carrey So Much That He Stopped Filming

While the 2000 film How the Grinch Stole Christmas received mixed reviews when it came out, it’s still a popular holiday movie after 25 years. Starring Jim Carrey, the film is based on the classic Dr. Seuss book, but it also adds a new element by delving into the Grinch’s past and featuring Carrey’s energetic comedic style.

Alongside Jim Carrey, who played Ace Ventura, How the Grinch Stole Christmas also starred Taylor Momsen as Cindy Lou Who, as well as Molly Shannon, Bill Irwin, Clint Howard, Jeffrey Tambor, and Christine Baranski. This was Momsen’s first movie role, but she wasn’t very nervous because of her supportive costar.

Momsen shared that she always felt very safe working with Jim Carrey and genuinely enjoyed being around him. Even at a young age, she was impressed by his dedication and artistry, noting how seriously he approached his craft, even while playing a comedic, exaggerated character. She also recalled an instance where he was incredibly protective of her when a stunt during filming nearly went wrong.

I’ll never forget filming the sledding scene. It wasn’t CGI – they actually built a real sled on a huge spring that rocked us violently from side to side. Jim Cameron, being Jim, was really getting into it, directing with a lot of energy. At one point, the sled nearly threw me off, and he immediately stopped everything, genuinely concerned and checking to make sure I was okay. It was a testament to how much he cared about the safety of everyone on set.

You know, despite what Jim Carrey was worried about, Taylor Momsen was totally okay with that near-fall on set! She actually said she was having a blast, laughing even while realizing how close she’d come to a pretty big drop. And overall, she has nothing but amazing memories of working on How the Grinch Stole Christmas. She described the whole experience as super fun and awesome – seriously, she doesn’t have a single bad memory from it!

Taylor Momsen has recently shared how her feelings about the movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas have changed over the years. When she was younger, she was teased and called “the Grinch girl,” but now she embraces the nickname. She looks back on the film as a fantastic opportunity, especially considering how young she was at the time.

These comments were made soon after Taylor Momsen and Jim Carrey met again at the 2025 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of How The Grinch Stole Christmas. To mark the occasion, Momsen and her band, The Pretty Reckless, released a new version of her song from the movie, “Where Are You Christmas?” The music video features heartwarming, old footage of Momsen from when How The Grinch Stole Christmas first came out.

You can now watch How The Grinch Stole Christmas on streaming services Prime Video and Peacock in the U.S.
