Getting the Scavenger Mount early on will help you explore the world of Gothic 1 Remake much more easily. To unlock it, you’ll need to finish the “Beak Performance” side quest. The NPC who gives you this quest, Cohsel, can be tricky to find. If you want a faster way to get around the Colony, here’s how to obtain the Scavenger Mount in Gothic 1 Remake.
Here’s How to Get a Mount in Gothic 1 Remake

First, grab a map – finding Cohsel can be tricky without one! Once you have it, here’s what else you’ll need before starting your search:
- 5x Kingstide Algae (dive inside lakes and rivers to find purple algae)
- 3x Wolf’s Skin (purchase from Cavalorn, located west of the Old Camp)
- 2x Leather Strips (Fisk at the Old Camp sells this item)
Leave the Old Camp through the main exit and turn left. Stay on this path until you get to the crossroads, then turn right and take the path that goes downhill. As you continue, you’ll see a small hut and a fallen log on your right. After that, turn left and walk up the hill. You’ll find a hut with a Scavenger inside a stable, and a Wolf named Dandy will be resting near the entrance. Importantly, do not attack Dandy or the Scavenger.
Go inside and talk to Cohsel. Keep talking to him until you’ve gone through all his dialogue, then ask about the Scavengers. He’ll initially say no, but keep pressing him until he agrees to trade information for the items we discussed. If you don’t have those items yet, go get them, then go back to Cohsel. Finally, return to camp and wait one full day in the game.
When you’re prepared, go back to Cohsel and ask about the Scavenger. He’ll confirm that it’s ready for you. Completing the Beak Performance side quest will reward you with the Scavenger Mount, a Scavenger Whistle, and the Riding Skill. If you’re new to Gothic 1 Remake, getting this mount early is highly recommended – it will make exploring much faster and give you a good head start.
Tips to Ride the Scavenger Mount in Gothic 1 Remake
In Gothic 1 Remake, summon your Scavenger by using the Scavenger Whistle whenever you need it. Keep in mind that your Mount can’t go everywhere – it’s restricted in Caves, Cities, and Camps. Despite this limitation, it’s incredibly useful for quickly traveling across the world, saving you a lot of time compared to walking.
One drawback of riding a Scavenger is that you can’t attack while mounted, no matter what weapons you start with. Because of this, it’s best to steer clear of fights while on your Scavenger and come back to deal with enemies later – the risk of losing your mount is too great.
To truly get the most out of Gothic 1 Remake, it’s best to acquire the Scavenger skill early on. Also, a fun little detail: you can pet your horse by dismounting and pressing the F key!
