The Best Actress category at the Oscars is usually very competitive. However, even with a strong group of nominees and some amazing performances that weren’t even recognized, this year’s race feels decided already.
Jessie Buckley’s performance in Chloë Zhao’s Hamnet has been widely praised by critics, and she’s already won several awards leading up to the Academy Awards in mid-March. Most experts believe she is a strong favorite to win the Oscar.
The moving film, adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s novel, has received eight nominations overall, including nods for best director (Zhao) and best picture. However, many were surprised that Paul Mescal wasn’t nominated for best supporting actor.
Wondering what everyone is talking about? If you haven’t seen it yet and want to decide if it’s worth the buzz – and the emotional reaction people are having – before the Oscars, here’s everything you need to know about how to watch it.

How to watch Hamnet – is it streaming?
Good news! You can now watch Hamnet at home, starting Tuesday, February 3rd. It’s available to rent or buy on streaming platforms like Prime Video, Google Play, Apple TV, and YouTube. Rentals cost £15.99, and you can purchase the film for £19.99.
If the price seems high, it’s currently unknown whether or when the movie will be available on streaming services.
Universal movies usually become available on NOW and Sky Cinema eventually, but it will likely be several months after their theatrical release – typically around six to seven months. We’ll update this page if we learn about an earlier streaming date.
You can still see the movie in theaters! It’s been a month since its release in the UK, but it’s still playing in many cinemas nationwide, and will likely continue to be shown as awards season progresses. Check your local cinema listings to see if it’s playing near you.
What is Hamnet about?
The play Hamnet is inspired by Maggie O’Farrell’s novel of the same name. The novel reimagines the real-life story of William Shakespeare’s son, Hamnet, and explores how his death might have influenced Shakespeare’s most famous plays.
William Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes, were overjoyed when their son, Hamnet, was born. Sadly, Hamnet died as a young boy, and this heartbreaking loss went on to inspire Shakespeare’s famous play, Hamlet.
