So long, Hulu. Well, not exactly goodbye, but things are changing. Now that Disney+ is moving ahead with plans to retire the streaming service it bought in 2019, we’re starting to understand what these changes will look like and how they’ll affect the shows and movies we currently enjoy on Hulu. Disney has announced that users “will begin to see further integrations of Hulu across the Disney+ app as part of an ongoing and iterative slate of product updates on the homepage and beyond.”
However, those who prefer the original Hulu app shouldn’t celebrate just yet, because Disney has announced that it will eventually be discontinued in 2026, although a specific date hasn’t been determined. For now, users can still download and use the Hulu app, but it’s uncertain how this transition will be managed as the shutdown approaches. According to CEO Bob Iger, “Work is already underway to continue enhancing our technology, and over the coming months, we will be implementing numerous improvements within the Disney+ app, including exciting new features and a more personalized homepage.” It appears that all future development will focus on improving the Disney+ experience, including a recommendations page similar to the ‘For You’ style-which could be fantastic, or a complete failure.
Will These Improvements Actually Make The App Better?

Disney announced that these improvements are only the first step, with more changes coming before they release a combined app experience next year. They explained, according to Variety, that they aim to offer a streaming service that stands out by giving subscribers a lot of choice, convenience, high quality, and better personalization.”
The For You page could offer a great user experience. We all appreciate content that’s personalized and understands what we want to watch when we’re too tired to decide for ourselves, saving us from endlessly scrolling. However, it’s a double-edged sword. It can also lead us towards increasingly similar content, essentially becoming an echo chamber that only confirms our existing beliefs. It remains to be seen how this will play out. Unfortunately, we can only wait and see. Especially since Disney is increasing prices for both its ad-supported and ad-free plans, they really need these new For You recommendations to be exceptional-otherwise, they risk a lot of users deleting the app.
