What’s the view from your sofa?
The sofa is soft and plush, yet overly large; my short legs struggle to touch the ground when I lean against its back, thus requiring constant cushion adjustments. If reclined, it would offer supreme comfort, but sharing it with my co-star Claire [Skinner from Outnumbered] and our Labrador Ronnie becomes a challenge. A humorous play on words as Ronnie shares the name with Ronnie Barker. He often finds himself on the sofa, despite not being allowed to.
Who controls the remote at home — you or Claire?
In simpler terms, the selection of shows we watch tends to be a collaborative choice, but when it comes to sports, I often end up watching alone. At the moment, we’re engrossed in a peculiar Spanish crime drama titled “The Drought” on Walter Presents. It’s an intriguing story about investigating deaths that occur when a reservoir runs dry.
Where does your sense of humour come from?
My parents were quite amusingly disposed, often breaking into laughter. Being the son of a clergyman added to the humor since he was known for his eccentric attire. He would frequently don peculiar costumes while addressing crowds, which in a way mirrors my profession.
What did you learn from your time in Footlights at Cambridge?
Collaboration is a key aspect of comedy, especially in environments like Footlights Sketch Club where success depends on mutual support. In this club, I’ve had to lean on Steve Punt, someone I continue to collaborate with, as well as Nick Hancock. My admiration for those who were two years senior to me, namely Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson, and the late Tony Slattery, was instrumental in my growth as a comedian.
Have you spent a significant amount of time in continuous series like “Not Going Out” and “Outnumbered.” Is it fun for you to keep portraying the same characters?
Over the years, I’ve had an incredible run with various extended projects. To me, Not Going Out doesn’t seem long-lasting; however, our stint on Radio 4 with The Now Show spanned 26 years, while Outnumbered ran for approximately 15 years.
Was working on Outnumbered last year better with Claire as your wife?
In simpler terms, having her as both my fictional spouse and actual wife simplifies things significantly when it comes to work at the BBC, as it streamlines travel arrangements and cuts down on transportation expenses. It’s quite convenient, and I find it rather pleasant and uplifting.
Will we get more episodes?
I haven’t decided yet. What I appreciate about Outnumbered is that it always required a specific focus. If they come up with an idea that excites them, I believe it could be considered. Frankly, I enjoy not being tied to long-running projects anymore; it’s refreshing not to know my next move. Of course, given the chance, I would love to participate.
Was it an enjoyable experience for you to portray a stalker on Channel 4’s The Couple Next Door, since this role allowed you to step out of the typical “good guy” character you often play?
One appealing aspect of it was its allure, as I seldom encounter scenes that fail to bring a smile to my face. In the production Beyond Paradise this year, I portrayed a murderer, but the role of a stalker captivates me more due to its persistent unsettling nature. There were specific moments when I advised my children, Freddie (age 28, an actor) and Meg (age 26, a milliner), “Kindly avoid episode four!
You’re also currently in Cooking with the Stars — why did you decide to sign up for that?
I enjoy preparing meals, and I believed it could enhance my cooking skills, which I now realize it has. Interestingly, I discovered it’s not just about adding salt; there’s more of a flair involved, like a little theatrical move.
Are there any other reality shows you’d like to do?
My preferred choice for participation would be the exciting Race Across the World, a show I find captivating. If given the opportunity, I’d participate alongside my son, who shows great promise, and viewers might get a glimpse of my competitive spirit.
