Hugh Jackman Looks Better Than Ever As Classic Disney Hero (With A Key Twist)

The first look at Hugh Jackman playing a classic Disney character in a new, big-budget movie has been released, and he looks fantastic. 2026 is shaping up to be a packed year for Jackman, with rumors suggesting he’ll reprise his role as Wolverine in December’s Avengers: Doomsday. He’s also starring in a highly anticipated mystery created by The Last of Us creator Craig Mazin, and his performance in Song Sung Blue (releasing December 25th) could earn him awards recognition.

Despite everything else going on, Hugh Jackman is taking on a famous Disney role. He’ll star as Robin Hood in the new A24 film, Death of Robin Hood, portraying the legendary outlaw. Early looks at the movie show Jackman fully embodying the character, even leaning into the villainous aspects of the classic tale.

I just saw the first photos from the upcoming movie, The Death of Robin Hood, over at Entertainment Weekly, and wow! They’re really leaning into an older, more weathered Robin Hood. Hugh Jackman looks incredible – totally transformed with long grey hair and a beard, bundled up in furs, and standing dramatically on a cliff. It’s a really striking image and I’m already intrigued!

The new Robin Hood movie appears to be a very different take on the classic tale, moving away from the Disney animated version. It stars Hugh Jackman as the legendary thief facing the consequences of his past as he nears the end of his life.

Many people first encountered this character in the beloved 1973 Disney movie, which famously used animated talking animals to tell the traditional story. Over the years, there have been several film adaptations of this classic hero, including the 2018 version starring Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx.

Hugh Jackman will star in a new film alongside Jodie Comer, known for 28 Years Later, and Bill Skarsgård, famous for his role as Pennywise in It (and currently appearing in It: Welcome to Derry). The movie, titled The Death of Robin Hood, is scheduled for release in 2026 and will be directed by Michael Sarnoski, who previously directed A Quiet Place: Day One.

Will Disney Ever Revisit Robin Hood?

Fans used to seeing traditional versions of Robin Hood might be surprised by Hugh Jackman’s portrayal. Disney’s version of the legendary hero is closer to the classic image – think a green hat, tunic, and bow and arrow – that most people recognize.

This version of Robin Hood is a far cry from the traditional hero; he looks more like a Viking warrior or someone from the film Braveheart than the classic character. It’s uncertain if we’ll ever see the familiar Robin Hood portrayed on screen again.

Disney hasn’t made a new Robin Hood movie since the original animated film in 1973, even though it remains a fan favorite from that time. However, in 2020, reports surfaced that a computer-animated remake was being planned.

This project is a new version of the classic story about a fox who robs from the wealthy and helps the poor. It’s being written by Kari Granlund, who also worked on the remake of The Lady and the Tramp, and will be available only on Disney+.

For the last five years, there haven’t been any announcements about the Robin Hood remake. With Disney now prioritizing theatrical releases over original films for Disney+, it’s likely this project was cancelled, along with others like the Witch Mountain sequel, a new version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and a spin-off based on The Princess and the Frog.

Since Disney announced they were revisiting Robin Hood, it’s become clear they’re really into making live-action versions of their animated classics. If Robin Hood does come back around, I’m guessing it’ll be as one of those live-action remakes, though they haven’t officially said anything about it yet.
