Hulu has canceled a promising new show, which many believed would have been a standout fantasy series. While reboots are common in both movies and television – and even popular shows aren’t immune – a reboot can be a good thing if done well.
Many popular TV shows, including Gilmore Girls, Scrubs, and Malcolm in the Middle, have been revived, with mixed responses from viewers. When a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was announced, it generated a lot of excitement and promised a fantastic fantasy series, but unfortunately, the project was later canceled.
Hulu Axing Buffy Ends Any Hope For That Buffy Vs. Supernatural Showdown We Wanted
Often considered one of the greatest and most impactful fantasy shows ever made, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was created by Joss Whedon. The show is set in the California town of Sunnydale and follows Buffy Summers (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar), who is part of a long line of young women destined to fight vampires and other forces of darkness – these women are known as “Slayers.”
Buffy’s job is to fight vampires, monsters, demons, and other evil creatures, and she receives guidance and training from a Watcher. She doesn’t fight alone, though – she gets help from her Watcher, Giles, as well as her friends Willow and Xander, and other people she meets during her adventures.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a critically and popularly acclaimed show, still celebrated today for its compelling female protagonist, distinctive style, clever writing, strong acting, and exploration of complex issues like loss, love, friendship, and overcoming trauma. The show aired for seven seasons, from 1997 to 2003.
A reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was discussed as early as 2018, but didn’t officially begin development until 2025. The planned series would have starred Ryan Kiera Armstrong as a new Slayer, with Sarah Michelle Gellar appearing in a recurring role. However, Hulu ultimately canceled the reboot in March 2026.
With the cancellation of the planned Buffy reboot, any possibility of a crossover event with Supernatural is now off the table. While Supernatural isn’t getting a reboot itself, a cast reunion seems likely, especially with the show’s 20th anniversary approaching in 2026. If both shows had moved forward, a Buffy reboot and a Supernatural reunion together would have been an epic event for fans of fantasy television.
Buffy’s Revival Being Canceled Makes Supernatural’s Return Even More Important
The planned reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer seemed destined for success. With an award-winning director like Chloé Zhao attached, and Sarah Michelle Gellar willing to return as Buffy, plus a working title (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale), the show had a lot going for it. That’s why its cancellation came as a shock and was a real letdown for fans.
As of today, it’s unknown whether the planned Buffy reboot will find a new home on Hulu or another streaming service. However, its cancellation has created a gap in the fantasy TV landscape, and Supernatural is the best series to fill it.
As a huge fan of shows like Buffy, I’ve always seen a lot of similarities with Supernatural. And honestly, the Supernatural fandom is still incredibly passionate – I think a lot of us would jump at the chance for even just a reunion special! It would be amazing to see those characters back and prove that shows with that kind of fantasy element can still really connect with audiences, even after all this time, just like Buffy the Vampire Slayer did.
