New movies often generate a lot of hype when they appear on streaming services, but sometimes the best ones arrive with little to no attention. These under-the-radar films can be surprisingly rewarding, as you get the pleasure of discovering something fresh. A recently added movie on Hulu is one of these hidden gems, and it’s well worth checking out for anyone looking for something new to watch.
Jeymes Samuel’s historical film, The Book of Clarence, became available on Hulu this Tuesday after being held by Netflix for a year and a half. The movie didn’t get much attention when it was first released – very few people saw it. Sony gave it a limited theatrical release in January 2023 with minimal promotion, and it only earned a little over $6 million at the box office, despite costing around $40 million to make.
Despite disappointing box office numbers, The Book of Clarence is a truly original and thought-provoking film. Sony released it in January knowing it would be a difficult movie to promote, as many viewers might not immediately understand or connect with its story. The film offers a fresh perspective on the Biblical tale of Jesus Christ, focusing on a character who attempts to profit from the rising popularity and legends surrounding Jesus.
Even though the movie The Book of Clarence takes many creative freedoms with the original stories, it’s a surprisingly intelligent and engaging take on New Testament tales. It’s also a grand, exciting adventure with impressive visuals and a contemporary soundtrack—think of the vibe of A Knight’s Tale. Plus, the film boasts a fantastic cast, including LaKeith Stanfield, RJ Cyler, Anna Diop, Teyana Taylor, and Omar Sy, who all deliver compelling performances.
If you haven’t had a chance to watch The Book of Clarence yet, now’s a good time – it’s currently on Hulu. At the very least, it’s a truly original film unlike anything you’ve likely seen.
