Fantasy movies often let us escape into imaginative worlds, but one film from the early 2000s didn’t quite live up to that magic. Recently added to Hulu’s streaming selection, this Disney movie was a box office disappointment and quickly ended plans for sequels. However, there’s still potential for the story to be revisited.
The movie Eragon became available on Hulu on November 1st, while a TV series adaptation is also in the works at Disney+. Directed by Stefen Fangmeier, the film is based on Christopher Paolini’s popular 2002 fantasy novel of the same name. It stars Ed Speleers as Eragon, a young farm boy in the magical land of Alagaesia, who finds a strange stone that hatches into a dragon. Though the movie earned over $250 million worldwide on a $100 million budget, it received negative reviews from both critics and viewers.
Eragon Is Getting a Second Chance on the Screen
Originally, the movie Eragon was meant to launch a whole series, building on Christopher Paolini’s popular books. With a strong cast, a fantasy-filled story, and the success of Lord of the Rings fresh in everyone’s minds, it seemed destined for success. Unfortunately, harsh reviews and disappointment from book fans led to its failure, and plans for sequels were scrapped.
The movie flopped because it significantly departed from the original story. It didn’t convincingly create the world of Alagaësia, turning impressive locations like Farthen Dûr into bland scenery. Key plot points were altered or cut completely, diminishing the story’s charm, and the timeline was rushed. Ultimately, audiences were disappointed, and the film received a very poor 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
After almost twenty years, Christopher Paolini’s Eragon is getting another chance as a TV series. Disney+ began developing a live-action adaptation in 2022, with Paolini involved as a writer and producer. While details have been scarce, Paolini recently confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that the show is still moving forward. With Paolini’s direct involvement, this new adaptation appears likely to be a more accurate and satisfying portrayal of his beloved books.
What’s New on Hulu?
Hulu added a lot of new content in November, including the movie Eragon. Other films that became available this month are 13 Going On 30, The Last Duel, and the 2018 version of A Star Is Born. Recent additions also include The Book of Clarence, the classic The Sound of Music, Miracle on 34th Street, and Love Actually.
