Hulu Streaming One of the Scariest Movies of the 2000s

One of the most chilling horror films from the 2000s, a decade that produced nerve-wracking titles such as “The Strangers,” “Silent Hill,” and “The Grudge,” continues to send shivers down spines as it’s now available for streaming on Hulu. Each month, the Disney-backed streamer expands its content library, with numerous new TV shows and movies set to premiere on Hulu in August 2025. Among the most anticipated additions of the month is a 2005 horror movie directed by Scott Derrickson, who has also created popular horror titles like “Hellraiser: Inferno” (2000), “Sinister” (2012), “Deliver Us from Evil” (2014), “The Black Phone” (2021), and the upcoming sequel, “The Black Phone 2.”

After his first significant role in “Hellraiser: Inferno” in 2000, Derrickson left an enduring impact on the horror genre with the release of “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” in 2005. This supernatural-horror legal drama is loosely based on the true story of Anneliese Michel, a young German woman who underwent exorcisms and ultimately passed away due to malnutrition and health issues. It continues to be hailed as one of the best exorcism movies ever made. Now, you can stream it on Hulu, as it became available on the platform from August 1st.

The movie “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” distinguishes itself within its genre by delving deeper than just a possession tale. It weaves together the struggle between faith and science, as it combines the exorcism at the heart of the story with a compelling courtroom drama. In this film, lawyer Erin Christine Bruner (Laura Linney) tackles a negligent homicide case involving Father Richard Moore (Tom Wilkinson), a parish priest who performed an exorcism on a young girl (Jennifer Carpenter) who passed away. Alongside them, Colm Feore, Mary Beth Hurt, Henry Czerny, and Shohreh Aghdashloo also contribute to the plot.

From the perspective of a movie critic:

In my opinion, the nail-biting terror and spine-chilling horror presented in “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” left me absolutely petrified. Carpenter’s harrowing portrayal of exorcism and demonic possession was nothing short of terrifying, and its haunting aftermath lingered long after the credits rolled. The film earned a 60% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a testament to its chilling impact on audiences.

Now regarded as a cult classic among horror enthusiasts, this movie proved to be a box office triumph as well, raking in a staggering $145.2 million against a meager production budget of $19 million. The film’s success was further solidified when it was awarded the title of Best Horror Film at the 32nd Saturn Awards.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose is now streaming on Hulu.
