A TV series based on the dark comic book Southern Bastards is in the works, and a pilot episode was previously greenlit. The complete cast for that pilot has now been announced.
The show’s new cast members are Ethan Suplee (known from My Name Is Earl), Jonathan Tucker (American Hostage), Amin Joseph (Snowfall), and Derek Luke (Michael). Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (Nickel Boys) will also appear as a guest star. Previously announced stars include Kevin Bacon, Erin Kllyman, and Tim McGraw. Reinaldo Marcus Green (who worked on The Punisher: One Last Kill) is directing the first episode and is also an executive producer.
Southern Bastards Is Getting the TV Treatment
The upcoming series is based directly on the Southern Bastards graphic novels by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour. It tells the story of a determined veteran (Kellyman) who travels to Craw County, Alabama, to find her long-lost father (Bacon). She quickly discovers a dangerous web of organized crime, led by a highly successful high school football coach.
Tucker is facing off against Esaw Goings, a former linebacker now assisting the football team at Craw County High School. Esaw likely suffers from the long-term effects of head injuries, though he hasn’t been officially diagnosed with CTE. He also acts as Coach Boss’s enforcer, willing to do whatever it takes to protect Boss’s interests. Despite being ambitious and quick-tempered, Esaw is deeply loyal to his coach.
Suplee will portray Eugene “Materhead” Maples, a retired football player who used to be an offensive lineman. He now works for Coach Boss as a loyal helper and someone who makes sure things get done. While he’s part of the coach’s dishonest group, he still has a sense of right and wrong and isn’t as ruthless as some of the others.
A Yellowstone Rival Is in the Works at Hulu
Joseph will play Hardy Whitworth, a former football player whose NFL career was cut short by a severe knee injury. Now the Sheriff of Craw County, he’s secretly controlled by Coach Boss, and willingly ignores criminal activity committed by those working for him. Though he seems like a friendly guy, the Sheriff will actively help Boss cover up wrongdoing.
Luke plays Uncle Lou, a lively and resourceful former tour manager who sees a chance to profit from his nephew’s football success. He isn’t intimidated by the coach’s local influence and is primarily interested in the financial possibilities of the sport, wanting to manage the money so his nephew can focus on playing.
Ellis-Taylor will play Vernetta, Roberta’s mother. After Roberta gets into trouble with the military, Vernetta encourages her to seek out her father for help. Though Vernetta previously left Craw County, she returns because of her daughter’s desire for revenge.
Southern Bastards has not yet been officially and does not have a set premiere date.
