The competition to become the top anime streaming service is heating up, with platforms trying to challenge Crunchyroll’s dominance. While Crunchyroll offers a wide range of both classic and new anime series, Hulu and Disney+ have recently started adding anime to their libraries. Many anime are known for epic, world-altering conflicts, but increasingly, adaptations are focusing on more personal and relatable stories. Sports anime, in particular, excel at showcasing exciting action within a smaller, more focused scope, and a popular series in this genre just announced a new movie is in development.
The animated series The Medalist first launched on Hulu last year, telling the story of two figure skaters, Inori Yuitsuka and Tsukasa Akeuraji. The first season, created by Studio ENGI, was a hit with thirteen episodes and has led to a second season. Joining popular anime like Jujutsu Kaisen, Oshi no Ko, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, and Hell’s Paradise, The Medalist returns this month. And fans won’t have to wait long after that, as Studio ENGI plans to release a movie in 2027. It’s currently unclear whether the movie will be a brand new story or a recap of the previous seasons, but the series has the potential to succeed with either approach.

The Medalist Skates On
Similar to many well-known anime series, The Medalist began as a manga. Created by Tsurumaikada and published by Kodansha, the first chapter came out in 2020, and new chapters have been released regularly since then. The anime’s unique take on figure skating has attracted a dedicated fanbase who continue to follow the story of Inori and Tsukasa.
Hulu has been actively acquiring popular anime series as exclusive content. A major success for them has been Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, the return of a beloved franchise. But Bleach isn’t the only anime available on the platform – you can also find series like Undead Unluck, Tokyo Revengers, Heavenly Delusion, and Go! Go! Loser Ranger, among others. With anime becoming increasingly popular, it will be interesting to see which other exclusive titles Hulu adds to its lineup in the competition between streaming services.
