Hulu’s critically acclaimed series, The Handmaid’s Tale, is getting a sequel, and fans will be happy to know it’s coming sooner than anticipated. While the show, based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel, isn’t necessarily one you’d rewatch often, it remains one of Hulu’s strongest shows. It paints a disturbing picture of a future where women who can have children are forced into servitude to bear children for the government. Over six seasons, the show has expanded on the novel, focusing on the characters’ fight against this oppressive system and their eventual attempts to overthrow it.
Following the conclusion of The Handmaid’s Tale, a new series called The Testaments will continue the story, based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 sequel novel. It’s set to premiere on April 8, 2026—less than a year after the original series finale aired on May 27, 2025. Similar to other shows on Hulu, The Testaments will begin with three episodes released at once, then switch to a weekly release schedule.
I’m really excited about The Testaments! From what I understand, it’s going to be a coming-of-age story, but set within the still-existing world of Gilead – sadly, it hasn’t fallen yet, even after everything that happened in The Handmaid’s Tale. The new show, starring Chase Infiniti and Lucy Halliday, will focus on two teenage girls at Aunt Lydia’s school, where they’re being trained to be future wives. Through their eyes, and with Ann Dowd returning as Aunt Lydia, we’ll really see what life is like under a totalitarian government, and how deeply it can take root, even when it seems like it’s falling apart.
The Testaments’ Release Date Follows a Rising Streaming Trend

The release of The Testaments is happening relatively quickly, which is a change for many streaming shows. We’re seeing more spin-off series debut soon after their original shows, like with The Boys and Gen V, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon, and The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein.
Streaming services are working hard to keep viewers engaged by releasing new content related to popular shows, even while it still takes a significant amount of time to create full seasons. This is good news, showing they’re responding to feedback about long waits between installments. We’re especially happy to see The Testaments arriving sooner than expected. However, now that The Handmaid’s Tale has finished, we might see longer gaps between seasons again after the first season of The Testaments.
