Following the huge success of Jaws in 1975, movies about dangerous animals became popular. Surprisingly, hippos hadn’t been featured in one of these ‘creature features’ – until now. The trailer for Hungry has just arrived, filling that gap.
This movie follows a group of tourists who find themselves battling for survival against a dangerous hippo after getting lost in the Louisiana swamps.
James Nunn, known for directing films like ‘One More Shot’ and ‘Shark Bait’, helms this new movie. The cast includes Joaquim de Almeida (known for “Road House”), Tracey Bonner (“The Exorcism”), Jim Meskimen (“Apollo 13”), Samantha Coughlan (“Damage”), Olivia Bernstone (“Mood”), Michel Curiel (“She Hulk: Attorney At Law”), and River Codack (“Under the Bridge”).
Although hippos are often seen as silly and gentle, that couldn’t be further from the truth. They’re actually very territorial and aggressive, and are responsible for more human deaths each year – over 500 – than lions or elephants. It’s surprising, then, that no one has ever made a scary movie about them.
To bring their creature to life, the filmmakers teamed up with Dan Martin, an award-winning creature effects designer known for his work on films like “Possessor” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” and the visual effects company Magic Dust VFX, whose credits include “One Piece” and “True Detective: Night Country.”
Hungry opens on 23rd June in the US with a UK date to be confirmed
