“I Am Deeply Grateful:” Late Frieren Star Honored By Son In Heartfelt Social Media Post

The series “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” is centered around reminiscing about the departed and valuing the time shared with them. Poignantly, Hikaru Tanaka, Atsuko Tanaka’s son, took to social media on the anniversary of her death to share memories of his mother, a voice actress well-known in anime circles (such as for her role in “Frieren”). Tragically, Atsuko Tanaka passed away in August 2024 at the age of 61, after battling an unspecified illness for a year.

Atsuko Tanaka is widely recognized by anime enthusiasts for her extensive voice acting roles. To Frieren fans, she’s best known as the voice behind Flamme, Frieren’s mentor. For Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure fans, she’s famous as Lisa Lisa, and to Jujutsu Kaisen fans, she’s acknowledged as Hanami. However, long before voicing these popular characters in recent anime, Tanaka lent her voice to one of the most iconic female protagonists ever created, in arguably one of the most influential anime productions of all time: Motoko Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell.

Atsuko Tanaka’s Son Remembers Her Mother & Thanks Fans

On a popular social media platform (originally Twitter), Hikaru Tanaka posted two pictures of him with his late mom, Atsuko Tanaka, and penned a touching tribute to her fans. His heartfelt message started by stating, “Today marks exactly one year since I said goodbye to my mother.” He expressed his sincere appreciation to everyone who has been sharing their feelings about his mother, adding that it means so much to him that she is loved and remembered. Strangely, he mentioned that this year felt like it flew by in a flash but also seemed interminable at the same time.

Tanaka’s post went on to say, “The past year has been filled with impactful experiences and transformations. There have been numerous instances that I can only attribute to my mother’s influence. The wisdom she imparted was to ’embrace life fully in the here and now.’ Whether it’s performing, eating, working hard, or facing challenges, this moment is what truly matters. Reflecting on her actions, I see now how my mother demonstrated the essence of gratitude and sincerity. To all those who have stood by me, thank you for your unwavering support. I eagerly anticipate your continued backing.

Atsuka Tanaka’s Incredible Legacy as a Voice Actress

In August of 2026, it has been one year since I lost my mother, Michiko Tanakadzuka. I’d like to express my deep gratitude to all those who continue to keep her in their thoughts. Thank you for loving and remembering her. I am truly grateful.

Instead of naming all the anime where Atsuka Tanaka hasn’t provided voiceovers, it would be faster to focus on those she has. Notably, her most renowned character is Motoko Kusanagi from the original “Ghost in the Shell,” a role she reprised in “Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence” and both versions of “Ghost in the Shell 2.0.” Beyond Kusanagi’s cyberpunk realm, Tanaka has also lent her voice to various titles such as “Persona 5,” “Beyonetta,” the heartfelt narrative of “I Want to Eat Your Pancreas,” and the peculiar world of “Bang Brave Bang Bravern.”

The identity of the new voice actress for Flamme’s character in the second season of Frieren hasn’t been disclosed yet, as well as the other roles that Atsuka Tanaka currently has active.
