God of War: Sons of Sparta lets two players team up locally, but there’s a requirement: you must first finish the game’s story mode by yourself before co-op becomes available.
In the past, on consoles like the PlayStation 1 and 2, this would have been a nice extra. Now, some fans are really angry that you have to unlock it by playing the game first.
After Santa Monica Studio explained things, one upset fan went to X (formerly Twitter) to voice their complaint.
Everything about this game suggests it’s a cooperative game meant to be played with a friend. The store description, the advertisements, and even the game details specifically mention two players. I was hoping to play the story with someone, and I’m really disappointed that’s not the case. I’d like to request a refund from PlayStation.
And that one user is not alone: dozens are making similar declarations, demanding a refund.
The PlayStation Store listing says the game supports “1-2 players” and features “single player or two-player couch co-op,” which explains why some people might be unsure about how it’s played.
It really shows how things have changed: it used to be enjoyable unlocking extra features by playing the game. Many of us remember spending hours in games like Tekken, repeatedly playing through the arcade mode just to unlock all the hidden characters.
Nowadays, people expect to have immediate access to everything, which makes things easier but diminishes the sense of anticipation and enjoyment that comes with gradually unlocking content.
Mega Cat Studios likely included this unlockable extra as a nod to older games, but the response has been strongly negative. We anticipate they’ll fix it in an upcoming update.
