Among the network shows making a comeback in prime time during the 2025 TV schedule, ABC’s High Potential is one that stands out, thanks largely to its murder-infused dramedy setting up three captivating cliffhangers in the Season 1 finale. Few shows manage to pull off a single compelling cliffhanger effectively, so Kaitlin Olson‘s portrayal of Morgan struggling with a problematic trio highlights the team’s creative prowess. Initially, I had concerns that Season 2 might leave viewers hanging for continuations and resolutions, but Olson, along with co-star Daniel Sunjata, have effectively put those worries to rest.
As a recap: At the end of the episode titled “Let’s Play”, Morgan discovered that the unknown Gamemaster killer, played by David Giuntoli, was actually someone she had unknowingly interacted with, and they might share some hidden bond. Furthermore, Karadec acquired intelligence from Domenick Lombardozzi’s character Conforth which could potentially reveal where Morgan’s long-lost husband Roman is currently residing. Lastly, Morgan’s potential relationship with JD Pardo’s character Tom was put on hold when she mysteriously avoided him at the LAPD banquet. Unfortunately for her, his upcoming Netflix show reduces the chances of his return.
It’s good news that the creative team recognizes fans’ eagerness for answers. ABC’s On The Red Carpet TikTok account posted a video with interviews from Kaitlin Olson and Daniel Sunjata, who addressed the cliffhangers in a fun conversation format, providing updates on some of the unresolved plot points.
- KAITLIN OLSON: We left you on a three-part cliffhanger, basically.
- DANIEL SUNJATA: I do know that Season 2 picks up just a few days after the last cliffhangers.
- KAITLIN OLSON: We have a two-part opener addressing all of the things that happened at the end of the last episode.
- DANIEL SUNJATA: We’re just looking forward to doing more of the same.
Wow, it’s clear they didn’t disclose substantial information to solve the lingering storylines just yet, but it’s reassuring to have a sense of when the next episodes are set to resume their airing.
It’s clear that the events from the Season 1 finale won’t be too far in the past when the new season begins. I often find it confusing when TV shows jump ahead significantly between seasons, implying that no significant events occurred in the interim to advance the storyline.
Additionally, there’s an abundance of intriguing content that exceeds what can be explored in a single episode for High Potential. Thus, it seems fitting that this two-part opener is underway! While the specifics of how everything will be addressed are yet to be determined, I anticipate that the solutions will emerge as Morgan, Karadec, and others immerse themselves in a new case.
Kaitlin Olson explored more about Morgan’s state of mind during Season 2, and speculated reasons for her possibly lacking the same radiant self-assurance as before.
Morgan might soon begin to question her decisions more, given how deeply attached I am to this character. I find her incredibly captivating. What I adore about her is that she’s often underestimated, always manages to solve problems on her own, and seems self-reliant. Yet, it will become evident to her that she needs the support of these people after all.
Given that Morgan’s work responsibilities often interfere with her personal life, causing repeated issues in her relationship with Tom, it’s heartening to think that her understanding the need for assistance from others might alleviate some of her post-work stress. Even if Tom is no longer pursuing a relationship, there will likely be someone else ready to step into the role. (I don’t personally root for Morgan and Tom, but I hope things work out well for her with someone else.)
The showrunner of “High Potential” has hinted that Season 2 might delve into Morgan and Ludo’s past to explain their transformation from lovers to exes and then friendly co-parents. However, it’s uncertain how much Taran Killam, who is now involved in another TV series, will appear in the upcoming season.
Let’s carry on patiently waiting for the next season of “High Potential”, as it’s scheduled to come back on ABC starting from Tuesday, September 17.
