Ice-T Says Reduced Law & Order: SVU Role Wasn’t His Choice

Ice-T is chilling with Law & Order: SVU‘s latest decision.

With Kelli Giddish back as Amanda Rollins for the entirety of season 27, Ice-T finally explained why his character, Sergeant Fin Tutuola, hasn’t been in as many scenes recently.

He explained to TMZ in an interview on November 24th that it was a financial decision. They rehired Kelli, but couldn’t afford to keep both her and him on full-time. He said they told him he’d be brought in to work on projects as needed throughout the year.

He explained that everyone was eager to have Kelli return. With the arrival of new officers, he confirmed he wasn’t leaving the show, and his priority was getting ready for Season 28. This year, the producers had told him they would be giving him a lighter workload, which he appreciated and understood.

Even though he’s been on the show for a long time – joining in season two and second only to Mariska Hargitay in terms of tenure at 67 years old – he was still a bit worried about the change.

He remembered asking the executives if they were planning to let him go. They assured him they weren’t, telling him they couldn’t picture Law & Order continuing without him.

TopMob News has reached out to NBC and Wolf Entertainment for comment and has not yet heard back.

Nonetheless, the “Colors” rapper will only have love for his SVU family, no matter the outcome.

After 27 years with the show, I have no intention of saying anything bad about it. They’ve been incredibly supportive of me, and my hope is to make it to Season 28. It’s given me the opportunity and time to pursue other projects and interests as well.

He shared that he’s happy with where his life is going, especially enjoying making new music. Although he’s not retiring anytime soon, Ice-T – who has three children, including 9-year-old Chanel with his wife Coco Austin, as well as LeTesha, 49, and Tracy Jr., 34 – expressed his gratitude for the continued support from his fans.

Honestly, it makes me SO happy to hear people are upset! He said that with a little grin, and it just proves how much we all adore him. He was joking, of course, saying he’d be worried if we didn’t miss seeing him. But it’s true! We NEED more Fin! And the best part? He promised we’ll get little bits of him throughout the whole season! I’m already counting down the moments. It’s such a relief to know he’s not going anywhere completely, just… strategically appearing when we need him most. I’m obsessed, obviously.

Kelli was thrilled to be back with the team for the newest episode, especially after leaving partway through season 24. She couldn’t stop talking about how happy she was to return.

She told Extra last month she was thrilled about the news. It just felt like the right decision. As soon as she received the offer, she immediately knew she wanted to accept it. She’s excited to return to the show, especially with a new showrunner bringing fresh ideas. Despite being the 27th season, everything feels new and revitalized.

Okay, so everyone knew the show was heading towards Joel’s ending, especially because it mirrored what happened in the game – that April 2025 bit was a huge clue! But honestly? Nothing could have prepared me for how it happened. Seeing Joel… impaled like that? It was absolutely devastating, even knowing it was coming.
