In Chapter 44 titled “Presents”, Osamu Nishi and Shiro Usazaki’s comic series Ichi the Witch explores uncharted grounds. Despite the light-hearted tone, this chapter marks significant developments following Ichi acquiring Bakugami and Gokuraku officially joining Team Desscaras. The result is a grand debut party to celebrate Ichi’s witch status, inviting all influential figures in her world. The narrative concludes on a tense note as Kugumi expresses visible stress upon seeing her sister’s name among the guests.
Kugumi is widely loved for her charming appearance and unique personality that combines sweetness with a touch of mystery, yet she’s always ready to move swiftly when needed. Although the manga Ichi is relatively new, it hasn’t delved deeply into individual character relationships (except for Gokuraku). However, Chapter 44 hints that this might change soon, providing us with a sneak peek into the world-building of Ichi and a glimpse into the daily lives of witches as a whole.
Kugumi Is Sent With Ichi on a “Social Studies” Lesson
As Ichi grows restless under the weight of responsibilities from Togeice and yearns to explore the world again, Togeice discloses that Desscaras had been keeping Ichi’s earnings for herself. Desscaras defended her actions by stating Ichi wouldn’t know how to manage his money, prompting Togeice to teach Ichi some basic financial skills. Later, Togeice sends Ichi and Kugumi out into the city to spend their money, testing whether Ichi could handle it on his own. Readers get to delve deeper into Kugumi’s role as she assists Ichi in navigating the world beyond.
In my excitement, I found myself overwhelmed by an abundance of options, not to mention some prices that left me staggered. Desperate for guidance, I turned to Kugumi, who suggested a thoughtful gesture like giving a present was a more sincere way to express care than a direct conversation. Moved by his words, I picked out a small jar of candies for Desscaras, grateful for her warm invitation into her family. However, just as the moment seemed perfect, Kugumi’s sister, Spica Harvest, burst onto the scene, quickly zeroing in on a troubled Kugumi.
Ichi Is Taking Pains to Make Its Story Grander
Chapter 44, despite being relatively quiet, provided a touching respite. Unlike numerous other stories featuring Ichi, parties and festivals are often used to lead into another conflict or add more jokes and contrived emotions. However, Chapter 44 was far from cheap, and instead of escalating tension, it offered a momentary pause amidst the Bakugami arc. The comic effectively utilized this break rather than squandering it.
In Chapter 44, I witnessed not only the first in-depth portrayal of how witches manage their finances and daily routines, but also the initial subtle exploration of a character’s essence and emotions. Kugumi’s suggestion to get a gift wasn’t merely an act of kindness; amidst her turmoil with her sister, it could have hinted at deeper feelings such as loneliness, sibling rivalry, or perhaps unresolved issues stemming from parental or institutional favoritism. Her subsequent inquiry about Ichi getting a present for Desscaras later on suggested that she held the gesture dear, and possibly even expressed her gratitude towards Desscaras indirectly through Ichi.
From a psychological and narrative perspective, Chapter 44 was rich and fulfilling, offering more depth than might initially meet the eye. So far, the series Ichi the Witch has consistently amazed by making significant implications from seemingly minor exchanges. Particularly in this chapter with Kugumi, it’s evident that while not every character receives a substantial backstory like Gokuraku does, the creative team behind Ichi demonstrates exceptional storytelling skills, transforming almost nothing into something meaningful.
