A classic PlayStation 1 game from 1995 is getting a fresh update later this year, according to its original creator. Like many games from the 90s, 2000s, and now even the 2010s, it’s making a comeback thanks to a wave of nostalgia. These older titles are being brought to newer consoles, sometimes with simple updates, and other times with complete remakes. While there are various reasons for this trend, the main driver is simple: nostalgia is popular, and many dedicated gamers fondly remember the original PlayStation.
Michael Ancel, the creator of Rayman, has announced that the original Rayman game is getting remastered later this year. This news comes after Australia’s rating board listed Rayman 30th Anniversary Edition for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. While Ancel didn’t mention that specific title or which platforms it will be on, he did confirm the project is happening. He described it as being “rebooted,” suggesting it might be more than just a simple remaster, though his wording may not be precise. As Ancel is French, his English isn’t perfect, so it’s best not to overanalyze his exact phrasing. However, his specific use of the word “rebooted” is noteworthy.
Great news for Rayman fans! According to a recent interview with series creator Michel Ancel in Retro Gamer magazine, the original Rayman game is getting a high-definition re-release. A Ubisoft Classic
The first Rayman game, a beloved classic from Ubisoft, was originally released in 1995. It initially launched as a PlayStation exclusive, but it was later made available on many other platforms, including Atari Jaguar, Sega Saturn, MS-DOS, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Palm OS, Nintendo DSi, and mobile devices. The most recent version appeared on mobile in 2016.
The original Rayman was a huge success on the PlayStation, becoming one of its best-selling games ever – even though it wasn’t exclusive to that console. It’s also widely considered a classic title from 1995.
The game kicked off a whole series of sequels, but we haven’t seen a new installment since Rayman Legends in 2013. Considering it’s the series’ 30th anniversary, a return wouldn’t be entirely unexpected.
