I’d Hoped America’s Got Talent Voters Would Give A Comedian A Shot At The Grand Prize This Year, But Season 20 Could Still Make History

Here comes a heads-up: This week on America’s Got Talent, we delve into the live quarterfinals. The outcomes will be disclosed on August 27, and if you want to watch the episode the following day, you’ll need a subscription to Peacock.

Predicting the outcome of America’s Got Talent as audiences take over from the judges becomes challenging in the later stages. The current season is just two weeks into its live quarterfinals within the 2025 TV schedule. Unfortunately, one of my favorites was eliminated before reaching the semi-finals and setting a new AGT record. However, after seeing one of the groups advance following the most recent episode, I can envision the show creating history again with another unique performance, and I wholeheartedly support this.

I Was Rooting For Schuler King

I’m open about the fact that when it comes to America’s Got Talent, I can sometimes be stuck in my preferences. Apart from exceptions such as Richard Goodall from Season 19 and Kodi Lee from Season 14, I often don’t support singers because there are already singing-focused competitions like The Voice and American Idol. Furthermore, seven out of the nineteen winners on AGT have been singers so far. When it comes to child acts, they typically don’t get my vote either, and I usually lean towards magicians like Shin Lim from Season 13 or acrobats over stand-up comedians.

In Season 20, Shuler King truly turned things up a notch, and from the very audition round, I found myself wholeheartedly cheering him on. To me, he was absolutely hilarious during the first week of live quarterfinals – just check it out!

Or, more casually:

Man, let me tell you, Shuler King really stole the show in Season 20! From the get-go during auditions, I was all in for him. In my opinion, he killed it during the live quarterfinals’ first week – you’ve got to see it to believe it!

In the end, the king advanced to the Top 3, thanks to audience votes. This also signified an elimination, marking the conclusion of his journey as AGT’s sole comedian in the quarterfinals, with aspirations for the $1 million grand prize and a spot on the Vegas stage show. He had the potential to be the first comedian to win the top award in America’s Got Talent history, without the advantage of the golden buzzer. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be that Howie Mandel would witness a comic taking the victory this season. However, history could potentially be rewritten next time!

A Choir Has Never Won AGT

To put it straight-up, I seldom become overly enthusiastic about the top-notch choirs appearing on America’s Got Talent, as historically, choirs haven’t taken home the prize. However, Mzansi Youth Choir’s emotional tribute to the late Nightbirde in Season 18 left not a single dry eye in the venue, and I joined many others in AGT: Fantasy League in cheering when Sainted Trap Choir received last-minute approval for their rendition of Prince’s “Purple Rain.” While I admire choirs greatly, they haven’t won the competition yet.

After two nights of live quarterfinals on America’s Got Talent, Leo High School Choir is in contention. They aren’t necessarily the most talented singing group ever on this show, but they are exceptionally good and endearing. Their story could be just as crucial as their talent on AGT, and it seems compelling. Could they become the first choir to win a season of America’s Got Talent?

Initially, I would have thought Shuler King would advance further than the teen singers, but surprisingly, that wasn’t the case following the auditions stage. However, the Leo High School Choir’s jubilant performance when they received good news from Terry Crews this season has been my favorite so far. To be honest, it was a pleasant change after last week’s harsh eliminations by the America’s Got Talent producers, which Simon Cowell described as “mean.” For now, I guess it’s fun to cheer them on, since my early favorite didn’t make it through.

Absolutely, I’m now certain that I want to witness a historic moment on America’s Got Talent during its remarkable 20th season. My apologies to all the singers who are still competing! Don’t forget to catch the quarterfinals episodes of AGT every Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, and the results shows every Wednesday at the same time. If you miss an episode, you can always catch up with a Peacock subscription.
