If James Cameron Leaves The Avatar Franchise, There’s An A+ Horror Director Who’s Down To Step In

James Cameron is the driving force behind the incredible success of the Avatar films, having guided the franchise from its initial ideas to its current blockbuster status. However, even Cameron has suggested he won’t direct forever, and a horror film director is eager to take over the series when he steps down.

I recently learned from ScreenRant that James Wan is definitely interested in directing a future Avatar film should Cameron ever decide to pass the torch. He told them while promoting his new project, The Copenhagen Test, that Avatar is one of the only huge franchises he hasn’t tackled yet, and he’s eager to jump in if given the chance. It’s exciting to hear he’s so enthusiastic about potentially taking on such a massive project, especially since Avatar is readily available to stream on Disney+.

The creator of The Conjuring films is reportedly interested in directing a future Avatar movie at a tricky time for the franchise. The latest installment, Fire and Ash, is already a huge success, quickly approaching $1 billion worldwide. This makes the idea of the current director stepping down seem unlikely, but he has admitted it’s a possibility. With Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 planned for 2029 and 2031, James Cameron has publicly discussed wanting to focus on other projects he’s been developing for a long time, including another Terminator movie.

James Cameron, the director of True Lies, might eventually step back, and James Wan would be a logical successor. Wan consistently delivers commercially successful films – his Conjuring franchise has earned around $2.8 billion globally, making it the highest-grossing horror series of all time. Considering his work on films like Saw, Insidious, Furious 7, and Aquaman, he clearly understands how to satisfy both studios and moviegoers.

It’s no surprise that Avatar and the Conjuring films are vastly different. James Cameron meticulously built the world of Avatar, focusing on innovative underwater filming technology and techniques. James Wan, on the other hand, acknowledges that directing something like Avatar would likely be a team effort. However, if any horror director could pull it off, it would probably be him.

Disney might only be willing to continue with the project if they have a strong partnership, especially since the original creator isn’t directing.

As a huge fan, I was shocked to hear Cameron might be stepping down as director! He’s been so involved in every aspect of these films, and his attention to detail is clearly a big reason why they’ve been so successful. I mean, the first two movies alone made almost $5.3 billion worldwide – that’s incredible!

As of today, James Cameron is still planning to direct Avatar 4 and 5. However, Disney feels secure knowing that a successful director like James Wan is interested in taking over the franchise if Cameron chooses to work on different projects in the future.

The other James – the Australian horror director – will be directing a film adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu. However, there’s no confirmed release date, and it’s currently unknown if the movie will come out in 2026.
