Since it was published in 2023, Fourth Wing has become a standout book in the romantic fantasy genre, attracting both longtime fantasy fans and people new to the genre. Those who already read a lot of fantasy might have a long list of books to get to after finishing Onyx Storm, but new readers might be looking for their next read.
With so many fantasy books available, it can be tough to find one that expertly blends fantasy and romance. And while many books try to recreate the magic of Fourth Wing, it’s a unique story that’s hard to duplicate. Luckily, there are other romantasy novels that offer a similar experience. They arenât perfect substitutes, but they’re definitely worth reading if you loved Rebecca Yarrosâ book.
5) Quicksilver by Callie Hart

If you loved Fourth Wing and are looking for your next read, check out Quicksilver by Callie Hart, the popular BookTok fantasy romance. While it features fae and vampires instead of dragons, Quicksilver shares Fourth Wingâs fast pace and easy writing style. It also has a compelling enemies-to-lovers romance with a dark and mysterious love interestâsimilar to Xaden Riorsonâand plenty of steamy scenes, delivered right away, without making you wait for the next book. Plus, itâs being adapted into a Netflix series, making now the perfect time to start reading!
4) A Court of Thorns & Roses by Sarah J. Maas

If you enjoyed Fourth Wing, youâll probably love A Court of Thorns & Roses, and vice versa! Both series have become incredibly popular for a reason. They expertly blend fantasy and romance, building detailed, realistic worlds with engaging stories that are easy to get lost in. Like Fourth Wing, A Court of Thorns & Roses tackles complex issues such as power, injustice, and overcoming difficult experiences. Though the romantic leads differ, both series feature a brooding, mysterious love interest.
3) Faebound by Saara El-Arifi

If you enjoyed the strong connection between dragon and rider in Fourth Wing, youâll probably like Saara El-Arifiâs Faebound, even though the two books are quite different. Faebound follows an exiled Elven soldier and her sister as they discover a hidden world of faeâbeings linked to powerful entities called obeah. The mental connection between the fae and obeah is reminiscent of the bond between dragons and riders in The Empyrean Series. Like Fourth Wing, Faebound also delves into how history can be manipulated to maintain power and fuel conflictâa timeless and important theme.
2) Dire Bound by Sable Sorensen

If you loved the connection between riders and dragons in Fourth Wing, you might enjoy Dire Bound by Sable Sorensen. Itâs often suggested for fans of Rebecca Yarrosâ series, though this book features a bond between humans and wolves instead of dragons. The story follows a heroine who bravely joins the army to find her sister, and quickly faces unexpected and dangerous challenges. Its strong military themes and perilous trials make it similar to Fourth Wing, and it includes a classic enemies-to-lovers romance. Plus, the sequel, Fury Bound, is coming out in May, giving you more to read while you wait for the next book in The Empyrean Series.
1) Fireborne by Rosaria Munda

If you enjoyed books about dragon rider academies like Fourth Wing, Fireborne might be a good fit, but it’s different. While it shares some similar themes, Fireborne focuses more on political intrigue and less on romance. It’s geared towards young adults, so don’t expect the same intense romantic connection as in Fourth Wing. However, if you appreciated the deeper questions about politics and philosophy in Fourth Wing and other fantasy novels, you’ll find those explored in a more detailed way in Fireborne and the rest of the series.
