If You Loved Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, You Should Watch From Dusk Till Dawn

With so many sequels and reboots dominating the movie scene, Sinners was a refreshing surprise. This completely original horror film, created by Ryan Coogler, took a fresh approach to the familiar world of vampires, resulting in something truly special. The film also reunited Coogler with frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan, adding emotional depth to the vampire story.

In the film Sinners, Jordan played both Smoke and Stack, twin brothers who encounter vampires after opening a speakeasy. The story, set in Mississippi during the Jim Crow era, blends historical culture with worldwide mythology. Director Ryan Coogler has said the film draws inspiration from cult classics like the ’90s film From Dusk Till Dawn.

Sinners and From Dusk Till Dawn Share a Memorable Set-Up

The Smokestack twins started working at Club Juke hoping to make a living, and they certainly didn’t anticipate finding vampires. They were already worried about finances and the danger posed by the KKK, but things took a terrifying turn once night fell, turning their reality into a horror film.

If you hadn’t known anything about the movie beforehand, the beginning would have been unexpected. The first half of Sinners focuses on developing the characters and establishing their motivations and weaknesses. We see Smoke still grieving the loss of his child with Annie, while Stack tries to accept that he can’t be with Mary.

These story elements were crucial for creating an engaging narrative, but they also unknowingly opened the door for vampires to enter and disrupt the close community. The setup is similar to that in the movie Sinners, where the creatures don’t appear until about an hour in.

Many viewers were surprised by From Dusk Till Dawn. It initially seemed like a typical crime film, especially with Quentin Tarantino involved. The script was penned by the director of Reservoir Dogs, which created a lot of buzz. Ultimately, it proved to be another example of his signature, intense violence.

The movie From Dusk Till Dawn centers around the Gecko brothers, Richie and Seth, who go on the run after committing several crimes. Desperate to reach Mexico, they hijack a family’s RV, holding them hostage to get across the border.

The story started with the potential for a thrilling adventure, but took a surprising turn when the characters sought shelter in a Mexican bar. This bar wasn’t what it seemed – it was built on top of an ancient Aztec temple and run by vampires. By the time the group, known as the Geckos, discovered this, they were trapped and forced to fight their way out. Like the Smokestack twins and those who frequented their establishment, the Geckos had to quickly adjust to this bizarre new situation.

The characters in From Dusk Till Dawn were heavily armed, and the family’s father being a preacher actually helped with that. Over the course of the movie, Jacob rediscovered his religious beliefs, and Seth worked to become a better man. However, like in Sinners, their progress came at a cost.

A Bloodbath Takes Up the Latter Half of From Dusk Till Dawn

Though vampires weren’t the main focus of From Dusk Till Dawn, they were relentless once they showed up. Sinners centered on protecting a town from zombies, while From Dusk Till Dawn was about escaping them. In both movies, very few characters survive.

These horror movies went against the typical image of charming, attractive vampires. Instead, they showed them as truly monstrous and demonic. In films like From Dusk Till Dawn, vampires often looked like animals, making it clear they were dangerous and evil. Their sole purpose was to kill, just like any other villainous creature.

Throughout the series, the true danger of these creatures wasn’t fully understood until it was too late. The films clearly demonstrated just how deadly they were, and the cost was high. When Remmick and his vampire gang began attacking the patrons of Club Juke, it became clear that many wouldn’t survive. Remmick started killing people as they left, but inviting them inside led to a complete massacre. Attempts to identify the vampires became pointless, and only a few people managed to survive until sunrise.

The movie From Dusk Till Dawn also featured incredibly high stakes. Similar to Sinners, most of the humans fighting back didn’t survive. And like that film, they lacked advanced technology, relying instead on simple weapons like stakes, sunlight, and a single piece of silver to defend themselves.

In the movie From Dusk Till Dawn, the people trapped in the vampire bar were armed, thanks to weapons stolen by the vampires from previous victims. Seth and the other survivors had guns and crossbows, but they still suffered heavy losses. By the end of the terrifying night, only one person from each group of friends remained alive. Like in the film Sinners, the strong friendships between the characters fell apart under pressure.

Brotherhood Was at the Center of Sinners and From Dusk Till Dawn

Both Sinners and From Dusk Till Dawn revolve around the stories of two sets of brothers. One pair, Smoke and Stack, became criminals due to limited opportunities, feeling it was their only path to success. The other, the Gecko brothers, appeared to commit crimes purely for financial gain. While both groups were criminals, Smoke and Stack were presented as slightly more relatable characters.

Despite their differences, the brothers always had a genuine connection. Smoke and Seth tended to be calm and composed, while Stack and Richie lived more like outlaws. Interestingly, both of the younger brothers eventually found themselves connected to the world of the undead.

It was a heartbreaking time for the older children, who suddenly had to care for their younger siblings. Smoke and Seth were forced to accept that the person they’d loved was gone. While Richie and Stack experienced different outcomes, this central struggle drives the story. These relationships weren’t random; they were all connected.

During a preview of the film, Nerdist learned about some of its influences. Director Ryan Coogler mentioned Robert Rodriguez as a key inspiration. While some might compare it to From Dusk Till Dawn, Coogler actually sees a closer connection to The Faculty, which itself was inspired by The Thing – Coogler’s all-time favorite horror movie.

As a huge fan of Robert Rodriguez, I immediately noticed the echoes of his style in Sinners. It’s clear the filmmakers were inspired by films like From Dusk Till Dawn and The Faculty – especially that iconic scene in From Dusk Till Dawn where they use garlic to check for vampires, which Sinners playfully references. But what really struck me about Sinners is that, despite the horror elements, it was ultimately driven by emotion, something From Dusk Till Dawn had too, though it presented it with a bit more of a fun, over-the-top vibe.

For years, From Dusk Till Dawn was seen as a bit of a cult classic. It certainly had the over-the-top action and violence typical of a lower-budget film. However, many believe its unique structure paved the way for the success and wider recognition of Sinners.

It’s tricky to shock an audience without alienating them, and revealing the vampires so late in the movie could have easily failed. Luckily, From Dusk Till Dawn had already paved the way with a similar idea, which allowed Sinners to successfully deliver on its intended vision.

Ryan Coogler’s movie took the time to develop its characters, the racial issues of the era, and a touching romance, all before introducing the vampire threat. What’s great about both this film and From Dusk Till Dawn is that they complement each other and spark discussion. Sinners has actually led audiences to revisit From Dusk Till Dawn with a newfound appreciation. And in 2025, horror movies are enjoying a surge in popularity, a bit of a contrast to the shadowy creatures at the heart of these stories.
