I’m Confused Why This Superman Stand-Out Isn’t the Lead of the DCU’s New Series

It’s unexpected that a standout character from James Gunn’s Superman reboot isn’t leading a new TV show in the developing DC Universe. DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran launched the revamped DCU with the Creature Commandos animated series in 2024, but Superman, released in July 2025, was the project that truly brought the new franchise to life in theaters. Superman introduced several potential storylines for the future of the DCU, and fans have been eager to see which ones will be explored.

According to recent reports, Jimmy Olsen, the Daily Planet journalist played by Skyler Gisondo, will be the host of a new true crime docuseries taking place within the DC Universe. While initially reported by Variety to be called DC Crime, James Gunn has clarified that isn’t the official title on Threads. The series will expand Olsen’s role, following his introduction in Superman. However, the announcement has raised questions about why Olsen, rather than a more well-known Daily Planet reporter like Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), is hosting the show.

Why Lois Lane Would Be Better for the “DC Crime” Series

A new true crime series set in the DC Universe, featuring a Daily Planet reporter investigating lesser-known supervillains, has a lot of potential. The first season is rumored to focus on Gorilla Grodd, and the show could explore many different cases. It’s disappointing, however, that Lois Lane – a more significant and respected Daily Planet journalist than Jimmy Olsen – won’t be the one hosting it.

Look, I’m excited about seeing Skyler Gisondo get a bigger part in the DC Universe, but honestly, we need a strong storyline for Lois Lane, too. For too long – especially in Zack Snyder’s films and most past Superman adaptations – she’s been relegated to simply being Superman’s girlfriend. It’s frustrating! Lois deserves her own spin-off, something like a detective series in the vein of DC Crime, and the new Superman movie felt like the ideal place to lay the groundwork for that. I’m not alone in thinking this – plenty of fans, like the folks over at @thedailykryptonian, feel the same way.

I’ve always felt Lois Lane deserved more focus, and I thought hosting a DC Crime series would have been the perfect way to give it to her. While I’m excited about the future of the DCU and know she’ll get more opportunities, I initially worried putting her in this new true crime show – the one created by the team behind American Vandal and Chad Powers – might box her in. Actually, maybe it’s a good thing it didn’t happen! We’re all anticipating Rachel Brosnahan returning as Lois in Man of Tomorrow, which is supposed to connect Superman and Peacemaker season 2 in 2027, but honestly, I’m hoping we get to see her in action much sooner than that.
