Even though it was released online accidentally a full 12 hours ahead of schedule, the announcement trailer for Horizon Steel Frontiers has already been viewed over 2.5 million times on YouTube in just three days. The gameplay trailer has also proven popular, racking up an additional 217,000 views.
Some of these views likely came from video ads played before other content, but overall, this is a strong start for the new game from NCSOFT. It will initially be released on mobile devices, and also on PC using NCSOFT’s Purple program.
Despite a lot of negative feedback – mainly about monetization that hasn’t been revealed and the absence of a PlayStation 5 version – a tool measuring reactions suggests people are generally leaning towards a positive outlook.
We believe Sony should have revealed Guerrilla Games’ new multiplayer project at the same time, as it’s likely intended for the PS5.
It’s clear that some of PlayStation’s most dedicated fans feel overlooked, but we can assume there’s a reason for this. It’s likely that NCSOFT’s game will complement whatever PlayStation’s Amsterdam studio is currently developing.
The South Korean developer has expressed interest in releasing Horizon Steel Frontiers on consoles. Given the huge success of mobile games like Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail on the platform, it seems likely the project will be approved.
The most important goal for this project is to connect with a new audience, and early signs – like how people are responding to the trailer – are very promising. It’s definitely one to watch.
