I’m Convinced DC Has Spent 8 Years Building A Justice League Trilogy & Nobody Noticed

DC Comics has been consistently delivering highly praised superhero comics since 2024, crafting a large, interconnected story across their main series and the premium Absolute line. While DC hasn’t traditionally focused as heavily on large-scale events as Marvel, their recent events have been exceptional. Looking at their latest event, DC K.O., it’s clear there’s a connection to Dark Knight: Metal and Dark Knights: Death Metal that seems to be going unnoticed. This link is primarily due to the fact that all three events are written by the same author, Scott Snyder.

As a huge DC fan, I’ve been following Scott Snyder’s work for years. He really broke out with his run on Detective Comics and the New 52 Batman, and honestly, he’s been a key part of what’s made DC so strong since 2011. When he came back to DC with DC All-In #1 after doing some smaller, independent projects, it felt like a real shot in the arm – so many of us had been missing his take on these characters. It’s made me realize that DC K.O. is actually doing something really clever. It’s focusing on the heroes that were central to the big DC events Snyder wrote, and it’s a connection I hadn’t even noticed we were missing until now. It just feels…right.

DC K.O. Is Scott Snyder’s Ultimate Word on Superman

Zack Snyder is famous for his Batman work, but he’s also written Superman in both Superman Unchained and Justice League. Though his Superman stories aren’t as widely discussed, he clearly has a strong grasp of the character. In the DC K.O. comic, especially the first issue, Superman’s struggle against his fellow heroes – forced upon him to protect everything from Darkseid – really highlights Snyder’s understanding of the character and adds a unique twist to the story.

Considering the events of Metal and Death Metal, it’s easier to understand why Superman would be central to a story written by Snyder. Metal started with ideas from Snyder’s Batman series, focusing on secret magical metals that were key to the metahuman world and highlighting Batman’s role. Death Metal then shifted the focus to Wonder Woman, who was the main character and the driving force behind saving the entire multiverse from threats like Perpetua and the Batman Who Laughs. She was the hero who ultimately succeeded.

It’s possible all of this just happened by chance. Stories about Batman and Wonder Woman aren’t unusual, and while it was a bit odd that Wonder Woman, who wasn’t the most popular of the three, was central to Death Metal, we didn’t think much of it at the time. But when you look at all three events connected to Snyder’s work, it becomes clear the writer wanted to create a story that highlighted the best qualities of each member of the Trinity.

The ‘Metal’ storyline highlighted Batman’s intelligence as his ultimate strength, allowing him to overcome incredible challenges, even against powerful foes and entire evil universes. ‘Death Metal’ focused on Wonder Woman’s unwavering hope and her willingness to do whatever it takes to succeed. Now, ‘DC K.O.’ seems to be exploring Superman’s defining trait: his relentless dedication to saving people, no matter how difficult the situation. Together, these three stories perfectly capture what makes Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman the greatest heroes of all time.

Snyder’s Work Helped Rebuild the Trinity

Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman – DC’s original superhero trio – are foundational to the entire superhero genre. While their stories have evolved over the decades, the last 25 years have brought many reinterpretations. Zack Snyder’s impactful work on these characters in major DC comic events has helped remind fans of their importance, and it’s great to finally see him deliver a large-scale Superman event of his own.

DC K.O. is a classic Scott Snyder event comic – large in scope, full of action, and featuring heroes facing incredibly difficult challenges. Like his previous events, it promises to offer a compelling new perspective on Superman, building on his established work with characters like Batman and Wonder Woman. This comic concludes a Justice League storyline that DC has been developing for nearly ten years, and I’m excited to see how Snyder will develop Superman’s story.
