As a longtime fan, I’ve always been amazed by the Green Lantern rings – they’re often called the most powerful weapons in the DC Universe, and for good reason! It’s not just raw power, though; it’s about what the Lantern imagines they can do. That means every Lantern is different, and we’ve seen some incredible, unique powers over the years. Recently, one really cool ability made a big comeback, and it’s wild to think it originally came from a Marvel hero!
In the latest issue of DC’s Green Lantern Corps (#11), Kilowog and Guy Gardner are teaching a lesson about “Energy Twins” – a relatively obscure concept even for fans. They explain that an Energy Twin is created when a Green Lantern projects their spirit outward, forming a green, visible duplicate that only other Lanterns and the Guardians can see. This ability, though previously featured in Green Lantern comics, is notably similar to Astral Projection – a power more famously used by Marvel’s Doctor Strange.
How Marvel’s Doctor Strange Influenced DC’s Green Lantern Superpower

Okay, so Gardner and Kilowog were explaining this crazy concept called an Energy Twin to me, and it blew my mind. Basically, it’s like creating a copy of yourself from your soul, and this copy actually moves faster than light! Apparently, you need to be super in tune with yourself to even pull it off. But here’s the catch: Kilowog said it’s mostly for scouting because you can’t really do anything while you’re projecting. It’s like your body is totally asleep and out of it, which, honestly, felt a little familiar – I’ve definitely had dreams like that!
Most people know this idea from Marvel’s Doctor Strange, who calls it his Astral Form. Interestingly, Strange first used this ability way back in 1951, in Strange Tales #110, and has used it frequently ever since. The core concept is the same in both cases: it affects the user’s body in the same way and allows for incredibly fast movement – Strange can even travel at the speed of thought. While both forms are invisible, there are some key differences between them.
Energy Twins are only seen by Guardians and Lanterns, but Doctor Strange can show his astral form to anyone he wants, and communicate with whomever he chooses. He can even cast spells while in this astral form, though these spells can’t directly impact the physical world. This ability is now appearing in Green Lantern, and it will be interesting to see if it’s improved to match Strange’s capabilities.
Green Lantern Corps #11 is in comic stores now.
