Following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker is facing major challenges. He’s adjusting to a lonely new life and is also experiencing physical transformations that could be risky. The trailer reveals that Peter’s DNA is changing, making him increasingly spider-like.

Peter Parker Is Going Through a Different Kind of Transformation in Brand New Day

Spider-Man stories have always featured change and growth. The first Sam Raimi movie used Peter Parker’s journey as a way to explore the challenges of growing up and learning responsibility. But the new story, Brand New Day, seems to be about something different. The trailer hints at spiders going through three distinct life stages, becoming weaker during each transition. A lot of fans, myself included, are thinking we might finally see Man-Spider brought into the MCU, and it looks like they’re taking inspiration from the classic Spider-Man: The Animated Series version. That storyline was so compelling – Peter’s original spider bite kept mutating, turning him into this wild, monstrous form. It wasn’t a one-time thing either; he had to constantly manage it with a special device, a Neogenic Recombinator, to keep the transformation under control. He didn’t actually get rid of it until a fight with Vulture, where the villain accidentally passed a mutation onto himself through his youth-stealing technology. It’s a really interesting arc, and I’m excited to see if they go in that direction!

Whether Marvel will fully commit to the idea of Peter Parker becoming a monstrous “Man-Spider” remains to be seen, but it’s thrilling to even consider. It’s a welcome change for a Spider-Man movie to delve into genuinely frightening body horror. Previous films focused on Peter adjusting to his powers—strange changes, yes, but relatively tame compared to transforming into a spider-like creature. The upcoming story arc, Brand New Day, promises to explore the terrifying possibility of Peter losing his humanity, adding a powerful emotional layer to the film.

The news that Peter’s DNA is transforming sheds light on Bruce Banner’s importance in Brand New Day. As hinted at in the trailer, Peter intentionally seeks out Banner for advice on dealing with his condition. Banner, with his own experience with genetic mutations, is likely to be a valuable resource. The trailer shows Banner wearing a device on his arm, possibly to control the Hulk – and given the buzz about a Savage Hulk appearance, this device could be crucial to the plot. Banner might be able to help Peter create a similar device to prevent him from turning into Man-Spider.

Whether Peter Holland becomes Man-Spider or not, now is the ideal moment for a Spider-Man series to explore that storyline. Holland has played Spider-Man in four solo movies and several other Marvel team-ups, giving him a solid history with the character. He’s experienced a lot, both physically and emotionally, making a story about significant genetic changes feel like a logical next step. This kind of development would have felt rushed with Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, but with the Marvel Cinematic Universe heading towards a fresh start after Avengers: Secret Wars, it’s the perfect time for Marvel’s biggest hero to face a major personal evolution.
