It’s no secret that Destiny 2 has fallen on some pretty hard times.
Internal struggles among company leaders, a shrinking number of players, and poor choices have led Sony to take control of the $3 billion development studio.
So, I heard from the company recently – during one of their financial talks – that the studio isn’t doing as well as they hoped. They’re basically taking a financial hit because it hasn’t lived up to expectations. It’s a bummer, honestly, because I was really looking forward to what they were working on.
Bungie is counting on its upcoming Destiny 2 expansion, Renegades, launching December 2nd, to improve the game’s performance.
This project is unique – it takes inspiration from Star Wars but isn’t officially part of the Star Wars story. The creators are building a new world that captures the feeling of that galaxy, while still being its own distinct creation.
It’s easy to criticize Bungie, but we genuinely appreciate some of the artistic decisions they’ve made. The behind-the-scenes documentary features beautiful artwork, and we think they’ve done a great job of blending the Star Wars feel with the distinctive style of Destiny 2.
Is this add-on going to be a hit? Early signs are promising – pre-orders on the PlayStation Store are doing well. It’s currently behind only a few top titles like Resident Evil Requiem, Reanimal, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, and 007 First Light, which is a good indication of potential success.
Whether it’s enough to resurrect the embattled studio’s fortunes, though, remains to be seen.
