With May here, the summer movie season is officially starting! Following a strong $76.7 million opening weekend for The Devil Wears Prada 2, the video game adaptation Mortal Kombat II is set to release this weekend. Warner Bros. originally planned to release the sequel last fall, but moved it to 2026 to capitalize on the success of Superman and boost their film lineup. Releasing Mortal Kombat II during such a popular month seems to be a good strategy, and early signs suggest it could be a big hit.
Okay, so early projections from Variety suggest Mortal Kombat II could bring in between $40 and $45 million domestically when it opens. If it hits the higher end of that range, it would actually outperform the first Mortal Kombat film, which made $42.3 million total. But we have to remember that first movie came out during the pandemic and was released simultaneously on HBO Max, which definitely hurt its box office potential. So, while a bigger opening would be great, it’s a slightly different comparison.
Can Mortal Kombat II Exceed Box Office Projections?

Recently, movies like Sinners, Weapons, The Conjuring: Last Rights, and Project Hail Mary have all surprised everyone with better-than-expected box office results, proving that predicting a movie’s success isn’t always accurate. When conditions are right, any film can perform well, and positive word of mouth is a major factor. Currently, Mortal Kombat II is getting good buzz, with a 73% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 84 reviews. If audiences enjoy the movie, they’ll likely go see it in theaters.
There’s potential for Mortal Kombat II to do well in theaters, as it’s been a while since a large-scale action movie was released. Project Hail Mary was the last film of that type, released in March. This suggests audiences might be eager for a new, visually impressive experience. Plus, the film is generating excitement among fans of the Mortal Kombat games, especially with Karl Urban joining the cast as Johnny Cage and the story focusing on a fighting tournament – a key element from the games. If reviews remain positive, Mortal Kombat II could have a strong opening weekend, potentially earning close to $50 million.
Despite the hype, Mortal Kombat II isn’t guaranteed the number one spot at the box office. It’s facing strong competition from The Devil Wears Prada 2, which is predicted to remain popular in its second weekend. The two films are expected to be very close in earnings, with The Devil Wears Prada 2 potentially grossing between $38 and $42 million. Because these movies appeal to different audiences, general viewers will ultimately decide which one performs better. If more of those viewers choose The Devil Wears Prada 2, Mortal Kombat II might not meet its projected goals.
Despite competition from The Devil Wears Prada 2, Mortal Kombat II is expected to open strongly. Experts predict it will earn $70 to $80 million worldwide, potentially covering its $80 million production cost in its opening weekend. Although this doesn’t include marketing and distribution expenses, the film would be quickly profitable, justifying Warner Bros.’ decision to begin developing Mortal Kombat 3.
