When Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, they also gained the rights to the Indiana Jones films, in addition to Star Wars. After a long wait, a fifth Indiana Jones movie, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, was finally released. While the film, directed by James Mangold, received mostly good reviews, it didn’t perform well with moviegoers, earning only $383.9 million worldwide. As a result, the franchise has been put on hold, and there are currently no plans for future installments.
Now that Kathleen Kennedy is leaving her position as president of Lucasfilm, details are emerging about the future of Star Wars and Indiana Jones. According to The Wrap, two planned Indiana Jones TV shows have been cancelled. One was an animated series intended to fill the gaps between the existing movies, showing more of Indy’s adventures. The other was a live-action show focusing on Abner Ravenwood, Marion’s father and a mentor to Indiana Jones.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Kathleen Kennedy spoke about the possibility of future Indiana Jones films. While she believes the franchise isn’t finished, she doesn’t think there’s current interest in continuing the story. However, she emphasized the enduring appeal of the films and noted that the key creative team – including herself, Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall, Harrison Ford, and George Lucas – still collaborate, giving them control over whether or not to make more movies.
Will Lucasfilm Ever Make New Indiana Jones Movies or TV Shows?

While the exact reasons haven’t been stated, the cancellation of the two planned Indiana Jones TV shows likely stems from the disappointing performance of the movie Dial of Destiny. With the film underperforming in theaters, Lucasfilm and Disney probably decided that further investment in the franchise wasn’t worthwhile, given the lack of strong public interest. Although both shows had the potential to be great additions to the Indiana Jones universe, it was hard to justify continuing them after the film’s results.
Despite the disappointing performance of Dial of Destiny, there’s a good case for continuing the Indiana Jones franchise with the planned animated series or the Abner Ravenwood prequel. A major reason Dial of Destiny didn’t resonate with audiences was likely because fans weren’t eager to see an aging Indiana Jones. A big part of the character’s charm comes from his adventurous, action-hero persona – the excitement of watching him perform incredible feats and save the day, similar to James Bond. While Dial of Destiny, with Harrison Ford in an older role, couldn’t deliver that same experience, the new projects could recapture that feeling.
With Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan now leading Lucasfilm, it will be exciting to see if they consider bringing back any previously shelved Indiana Jones projects. Lucasfilm’s animation team is incredibly talented, having created popular Star Wars shows like Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Bad Batch. They could bring that same magic to Indiana Jones, creating classic adventure stories with modern visual effects. One idea worth exploring is a prequel focusing on Abner Ravenwood. Expanding on his character and relationship with Indy – who he only briefly mentioned in Raiders of the Lost Ark – could add a lot to the story and finally show us Abner in action.
It’s no surprise that Lucasfilm is focusing on Star Wars – it’s been more successful for Disney and offers a much broader scope for storytelling. Unlike Indiana Jones, which heavily relies on a single character, Star Wars is set in a vast universe with a long history and detailed mythology. However, Lucasfilm should still find ways to keep Indiana Jones relevant. While another movie might be difficult to get off the ground right now – especially with the challenge of recasting the lead, as seen with Solo: A Star Wars Story – other options exist. The recent success of the Indiana Jones and the Great Circle video game suggests that expanding the franchise through gaming could be a promising path forward.
