Inside Luke Evans’ Relationship With Partner Fran Tomas

Luke Evans was so focused on working hard and achieving success that he didn’t have time for relationships or even to relax and enjoy life.

But then the Welsh actor met Fran Tomas in 2021, and fate took its course.

In a 2024 interview with Out magazine, Evans remembered initially fearing his career and new relationship wouldn’t last, thinking, ‘Here we go again.’ However, he was surprised and happy that they ultimately succeeded.

During their first year as a couple, he was mostly working on a film shoot in Colombia, while Tomas, who lives in Madrid, remained in Spain. Despite the distance, they made it work and have been together ever since, even making their first public appearance as a couple at the premiere of Pinocchio in September 2022.

Evans described their partner, Tomas – an architect and construction project manager – as a calming and stabilizing force in their life. They called Tomas a wonderful person and said they are “the best part of me.”

The pair looked fantastic together at the 2026 Tony Awards on June 7th, where Evans was nominated for his role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Show. Although Joshua Henry, star of Ragtime, ultimately won the award, Evans captivated the audience with his glamorous performance of “Sweet Transvestite” and was considered a highlight of the night.

In May, Chris Evans told New York Theatre Guide that he expected to feel self-conscious, nervous, and exposed while wearing his elaborate “full drag” costume – complete with high heels – for Rocky Horror. However, he was surprised by how he actually felt. “It was completely the opposite,” he said. “I feel powerful, strong, and confident, like I can take on the world.”

The 47-year-old author describes a difficult childhood in his 2024 memoir, Boy From the Valleys: My Unexpected Journey, explaining that he felt he had little hope growing up as a thin, sensitive child in a small Welsh town, raised in the Jehovah’s Witness faith.

He beautifully described their journey, saying they’d faced challenges, but ultimately, love has been the defining force that brought them through two very different life experiences. It’s a powerful reminder that love truly can overcome anything.

As Evans has shared, he’s lived openly since moving to London at age 16. This included being out and proud even as his career took off, like when he played Apollo in the 2010 film Clash of the Titans.

You know, back when I was really at the peak of my action movie career, I was often asked if I was ‘hiding’ anything. I always said no. It wasn’t about hiding; it was about paving the way. I felt a real responsibility to be visible, to create a path for future generations of openly gay actors. I needed to take that first step, even if it was a difficult one, so they could truly run with their careers and be themselves without fear.

Early in his career, Chris Evans made a conscious decision not to hide any part of himself, even though he generally kept the focus on his work and didn’t openly discuss his sexuality. He chose not to live a double life, avoiding both denial and excessive discussion of the topic.

In 2002, when Luke Evans first appeared in a West End musical called Taboo, which was about Boy George, he told The Advocate magazine that he realized he’d need to discuss his personal life to promote the show. He decided to be open and honest about who he was, stating that he didn’t want to work with anyone who disapproved.

He felt that being dishonest about who he was could lead to a life built on lies, and he didn’t want to begin that at such a young age. He was willing to risk financial hardship later in life, even if it meant being less wealthy when he was older, because living an honest and open gay life was more important than hiding his true self.

Evans didn’t feel he had to choose between his career and his personal life—he explained to the New York Times that he enjoys playing diverse roles and isn’t limited by labels. ‘I’m an actor, I can play anything!’ he said. However, his busy schedule did make it difficult to maintain a relationship.

He hadn’t been talking much about his love life, and in 2010, he told Cosmopolitan that he’d rather adopt a bunch of dogs and share them with a partner than focus on dating.

Evans recently shared a photo on Instagram with his miniature dachshund, Lala, calling her “the other love of my life” and hinting at a new companion. He seems to have adopted another dog!

When not working on Broadway or other projects, Evans and his husband, Tomas, split their time between Ibiza and Lisbon. They’re also considering expanding their family. In his memoir, Evans shared his hope to have children within the next five years, either through adoption or surrogacy, and said he and Tomas have discussed it. He described Tomas as someone he could definitely see being a parent with.

On top of that wonderful praise, the former Beauty and the Beast star has had plenty to say about how great his partner is.

Evans described the person as kind, calm, and consistently happy and positive. He also praised their strong work ethic, saying they inspire him to be a better person. He jokingly added that they’re incredibly patient with him, and he couldn’t imagine being on the receiving end of his behavior.

Apparently, it’s not all that bad, as the couple also co-founded the clothing brand BDXY.

Evans described himself and his partner as a strong team, telling People magazine in 2024 that his partner is the steady and thoughtful one, while he brings the energy and enthusiasm. He believes their different personalities allow them to overcome any challenge together.

He said they naturally collaborated, and he’s incredibly impressed with Tomas. “He’s amazing at everything, both professionally and personally,” he explained.
