Naughty Dog is currently developing its next major game, tentatively titled Intergalactic, and Troy Baker will reprise his role as a voice actor in the project. Baker recently discussed his close working relationship with Naughty Dog’s head, Neil Druckmann, in an interview with ComicBook.
During the interview, Baker explained that he frequently disagrees with Druckmann, particularly when it comes to how their characters are developed. Even though Baker will be playing a secondary character in Intergalactic instead of a lead role, he mentioned that their creative differences continue to surface.
Baker explained that he and Neil often playfully argue, saying it’s just part of their dynamic. He described a recent incident during a table read where they were bickering, and the tension was so noticeable that it felt like everyone else was worried about whether they were still going to have fun. Baker assured everyone they were okay and that this kind of playful conflict is normal for them.
Baker discussed his part in Intergalactic, as well as his long career in gaming. While he feels he’s reached a point where he doesn’t need to pursue more work, he remains thankful for his contributions to the industry. He also reflected on the valuable lessons he’s learned throughout his career, even from projects that weren’t huge successes.
Baker reflected on a fulfilling career, stating he feels he’s earned everything he’s received and doesn’t feel entitled to anything more. He’s now finding greater joy in the process of game development itself, rather than seeking awards or recognition. He cherishes the lessons learned from all his projects, even those that weren’t commercially successful or critically acclaimed. For Baker, the real rewards have always been the intangible experiences and growth, and he continues to find purpose and importance in his current role at Intergalactic.
Baker hopes to have a career similar to George Clooney, taking on a wide variety of roles – everything from leading characters to smaller parts.
He expressed his admiration for George Clooney, saying he aspires to have a career with both critically acclaimed films like O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Michael Clayton, and also to direct. He believes Clooney’s talent and collaborative spirit are the reasons why people consistently want to work with him, leading to roles in popular movies like Oceans 11, Up in the Air, and The American.
There’s no release date yet for Intergalactic, the PlayStation 5 exclusive. Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann has said it’s their biggest game to date – more ambitious, expansive, and costly than anything they’ve created before.
