I’ve been watching the anime world for a while now, and Inuyasha really stands out as one of the biggest franchises ever. It was one of the first shows to really popularize that ‘other world’ type of story. A few years back, they announced a sequel called Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, which was great, but it recently finished its run. Thankfully, the creator of Inuyasha, Rumiko Takahashi, isn’t stopping there! Her newest manga is being adapted into an anime, and we’re getting a new supernatural series this spring. We’ve just gotten some exciting updates about the story of Mao as they prepare for the release.
Manga creator Takahashi launched a new series called Mao in 2019. Unlike her previous work, Inuyasha, Mao centers around a character who battles spirits instead of demons. The upcoming anime adaptation will be produced by the same studio behind Inuyasha, Sunrise. A new poster for the series has been released, along with news about the opening theme song. The song “HEATLOUD” by Kis-My-Ft2 will play during the opening credits. This isn’t the first time the boy band has contributed to anime; they’ve previously worked on Doraemon and Cardfight!! Vanguard. You can see the new poster below.

The Story of Mao

Singer Toshiya Miyata will be performing the opening theme for the anime adaptation of MAO, and he’s thrilled about it. He’s been a fan of Rumiko Takahashi’s work since childhood and particularly enjoyed reading the MAO manga a few years ago, finding the story and action scenes captivating. He’s eager to see how the anime brings the story to life and hopes Kis-My-Ft2’s music will enhance the viewing experience.
If you’re unfamiliar with this series from the creator of Inuyasha, here’s the story: Nanoka is transported to the Taisho era and saved from a monster by the exorcist Mao. Returning home, she discovers she has gained strange new powers. She travels back in time seeking answers, but gets entangled in Mao’s investigation of a series of disturbing murders. As Nanoka tries to understand her abilities, she learns that Mao – and his sword – are both under a curse from a cat demon named Byoki. The sword is dangerous – anyone but Mao who tries to use it faces a terrible fate. But when Mao’s life is threatened, Nanoka bravely takes up the blade!
There’s currently no news about whether Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon will continue after its final episode. It’s worth remembering that the original Inuyasha sequel wasn’t announced until long after the first series ended, so a continuation isn’t out of the question.
