The animated series Invincible has been steadily leading up to the introduction of the Viltrumite Empire’s ruler. In the fourth season, Thragg, a major antagonist from the original Image/Skybound comics, finally appeared. While fans were excited about the casting of Lee Pace as his voice actor, the on-screen portrayal of Thragg hasn’t resonated with everyone. Many viewers have expressed their disappointment on social media, feeling that the animated version doesn’t live up to the character as depicted in the comics.
Fan reactions to the animated version of Thragg have been mixed, with criticisms focusing on several areas. Many viewers who are familiar with the Invincible comic books have pointed out that the animation doesn’t make Thragg look as intimidating as he did in Ryan Ottley’s artwork. However, it seems Amazon and Robert Kirkman intentionally chose a style closer to Cory Walker, the artist who originally created the look of Mark Grayson. Given that the animated series has faced animation critiques throughout its four seasons, it’s not surprising similar comments are being made about Thragg’s portrayal. You can find examples of fan feedback below.

Thragg’s Issues

Many fans have expressed disappointment with the casting of Lee Pace as the villain in the animated series. While Pace is a well-known actor, having appeared in shows like Pushing Daisies, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Foundation, some fans felt his performance didn’t quite fit the character and even created their own voice acting to demonstrate what they had in mind. However, the show’s creators, Robert Kirkman and Simon Racioppa, are fully supportive of Pace’s portrayal.
I recently spoke with Robert Kirkman about why they chose Lee Pace for the role, and he really praised the actor’s performance. He explained that Pace conveys a sense of power without being overly dramatic – he doesn’t need to yell or force it. Kirkman actually compared him to Jake ‘the Snake’ Roberts, saying that’s something they discussed frequently during the process – Pace embodies that same quiet, commanding presence.
If Invincible continues to follow the comic book storyline, Thragg’s role in the animated series will become even more significant after season four. In the comics, Thragg, the Viltrumite king, constantly caused trouble for Mark and was a terrifyingly powerful enemy. The rest of season four promises to reveal more about Thragg’s history, as actor Lee Pace shared with egmr.ru, venturing into previously unexplored areas of his character.
I’m really curious to hear everyone’s thoughts on how the Invincible animated series is handling the main villain from the comics! What do you all think so far? Let’s discuss it over in the ComicBook Forum – jump in and share your opinions!
