Invincible: How Nolan Survived the Scourge Virus In TV Show Was Due To His Secret Family History

The fourth season of Invincible kicked off by revealing the backstory of Mark Grayson’s father, Nolan, to viewers unfamiliar with the comic books. The episode showed what nearly wiped out the Viltrumite race, leaving fewer than 50 survivors. Nolan explained to Allen that a lethal virus, known as the Scourge, was responsible for the devastating loss.

Just after turning eighteen, Nolan narrowly escaped a brutal attack by his parents. His father immediately sent him on a mission, but before Nolan could even receive instructions, a terrifying event unfolded: everyone nearby began suffering from violent bleeding from their eyes, nose, and mouth, resulting in immediate death or a desperate struggle for survival.

I remember when Nolan stepped up to help with the quarantine and care for the sick, but it wasn’t long before he caught the virus himself. It was terrifying seeing him lying on a stretcher with so many others, all fighting for their lives. But somehow, Nolan made it through! He was one of the lucky few who walked away with Conquest when the worst of it was over, a true survivor.

Who Created the Scourge Virus in the Invincible TV Show?

The Viltrumites who lived through the attack didn’t know who was responsible for using such a sneaky weapon. However, that changed when Nolan encountered Thaedus, the head of the Coalition of Planets, and discovered the truth.

Thaedus confessed to being the Betrayer – the one who murdered Emperor Argall – and shockingly, he also admitted to creating the Scourge virus. He didn’t realize how devastating the virus was until Nolan told him that his people were almost wiped out, a revelation that deeply upset him, which he called his biggest mistake.

So, after taking out Argall, I always understood his reasoning for creating the virus to be about wanting a better Viltrum. He genuinely thought that removing Argall’s harsh rule would lead to positive change for the Viltrumites. But when that didn’t happen – if anything, it just made their anger and cruelty worse – he decided the only way to truly fix things was to wipe them all out with the Scourge virus. It was a drastic move, obviously, but he felt like he had no other choice to rid the universe of their brutality.

Thaedus revealed a more powerful version of the virus to Nolan, claiming it could wipe out the entire Viltrumite race if unleashed. Nolan, understandably upset, made Thaedus swear to only use it if absolutely necessary.

How Exactly Nolan Survived the Scourge Virus, According to Invincible Comics

Be warned: the rest of this article contains significant spoilers for both the Invincible comic books and what might happen in the animated series.

Even though Nolan is incredibly powerful as a Viltrumite, surviving the Scourge virus was amazing. But maybe it wasn’t just luck—perhaps something else helped him pull through.

Robert Kirkman, one of the show’s creators, recently told Variety that there might be more to the story of how Nolan survived the Scourge virus, hinting that further details could be revealed later.

We might learn more about this later, but right now, it’s uncertain. Viruses affect people differently – some recover, and sadly, some don’t. There’s a chance we’ll discover more about this character’s story as time passes.

Kirkman is likely pointing out that Nolan and his sons are direct descendants of Argill, giving them a legitimate claim to the Viltrumite throne, which is currently held by Thragg. Thragg discovered this family connection when Mark Grayson unexpectedly contracted a new version of the Scourge virus.

Thragg even told an unconscious Mark that he would live through the virus, explaining that letting him die would dishonor his family. This also clarifies how both Nolan and Mark survived the Scourge virus, considering they were much younger than the other Viltrumites who suffered through it.
