Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Invincible season 4 episode 8.
Despite having to replace the actor playing William, Invincible season 4 delivered a thrilling adaptation of the Viltrumite War Saga. The season ended with episode 8, leaving viewers wondering what will happen next for Mark and his allies.
Thragg, the villain everyone had been waiting for, proved to be as dangerous as the show’s creator, Robert Kirkman, predicted. Kirkman warned he would be a greater threat than anything Mark Grayson had encountered before, even more so than Conquest.
Based on the comic books, there’s a lot more story to tell now that Mark is back on Earth. Here’s a breakdown of what happened at the end of Invincible season 4 – including the status of Mark and Eve’s relationship, Nolan and Debbie, Robot (Rudy) and Monster Girl, and the Viltrumites led by Thragg – and what we can expect in season 5.
Spoilers ahead for the Invincible comics and potentially season 5.
Invincible season 4 ending explained: Why did Mark say yes to Thragg?

The major turning point in Invincible season 4, episode 8, happens when Thragg shows up and reveals the Viltrumites have been on Earth since the Viltrumite War. Ultimately, Mark hesitantly agrees to the Grand Regent’s condition: allowing the Viltrumites to remain on Earth with humans, in exchange for peace.
Mark agrees to Thragg’s terms at the end of Invincible season 4 for the same reason it happens in the comics: he understands that fighting the remaining 37 Viltrumites on Earth would result in a loss, and cause massive, ongoing casualties among humans.
The television version of the important conversation between Mark and Thragg follows the original storyline closely, though there are a few notable changes.
In the comic books, Thragg tells Mark he’s on Earth right after Mark gets home in issue #77. This happens with Nolan also present, creating a tense three-way encounter.
The season 4 finale of Invincible delays Thragg’s appearance until after Mark returns home. Instead of showing Thragg immediately, the show’s creators cleverly used this change to explore Mark’s deep-seated fear of him. Throughout the episode, Mark experiences vivid hallucinations of Thragg killing those closest to him – including Debbie, Eve, William, and Cecil.
Honestly, when Mark finally laid eyes on Thragg and knew he was real, not some figment of his imagination, it made his choice to give in to Thragg’s demands even tougher. The show did show some violence, but as a long-time comic reader, I remember those moments being much quicker and less drawn out in the original source material.
Focusing on these issues throughout the episode gave us a clearer understanding of the character’s past trauma. Having faced Thragg and realized the full extent of the Viltrumites’ power, he becomes significantly more frightening to watch, especially when Mark confronts him at the end.
Do the Viltrumites return in Invincible?

At the end of Invincible season 4, Thragg and the other Viltrumites disguise themselves and integrate into Earth’s population. Their plan is to reproduce and gradually rebuild their civilization. Thragg assures Mark and the other heroes that they won’t be hearing from him again.
Despite the recent season focusing on the Viltrumite War, the comic books suggest we haven’t seen the last of Thragg and the Viltrumites in the Amazon Prime Video series. While future storylines will mostly center around events on Earth, these powerful characters are expected to reappear.
The Viltrumites aren’t immediately featured in the next few storylines of the comic, but we anticipate they’ll show up at some point in Invincible season 5.
Invincible season 4 finale end credits scene: What does Thaddeus’s message mean?

The final scene of Invincible season 4, episode 8, features a message from the deceased Thaedus to Allen, the Coalition’s new leader. In it, Thaedus reveals the existence of a fully developed version of the Scourge Virus and states his intention to use it to eliminate all Viltrumites—even if it means harming humans on Earth, including Mark, Nolan, and Oliver, due to their shared DNA.
When Nolan discovered Thaedus was responsible for almost wiping out the Viltrimutes with the first Scourge Virus, it became clear that the ‘Great Betrayer’ would stop at nothing to destroy the entire race.
Thaedus’s statement suggests he believes wiping out humanity would be a worthwhile sacrifice if it meant completely eliminating the Viltrumites and securing peace for the rest of the world. It remains to be seen whether the Invincible series will portray Allen with the same beliefs in season 5.
What happens in the comics?
In Invincible comic issue #78, Allen discovers the updated Scourge Virus in a way that’s very similar to how it happens in season 4 of the TV show, even with some changes made for the adaptation.
As anticipated, Allen struggles with the moral implications and dangers of the virus throughout these recent issues. Given that the beginning of Invincible season 4 has put Allen in a similar position, we predict the Scourge Virus storyline will be a major focus of season 5, promising plenty of tension and conflict between Mark, Nolan, Allen, and Oliver.
Do Nolan & Debbie get back together?

As a fan, I’m really hoping to see Nolan and Debbie get back together! They didn’t reconcile at the end of season 4, but the fact that they’re both going to Talescria makes me think it’s going to happen in the next season – it’s what happened in the comics, so fingers crossed!
Okay, so the show really took a different approach with Debbie’s storyline compared to the original comic book. In the source material, she just… ended things with Paul and moved on pretty quickly after a sad conversation with Nolan. But in the Invincible TV series, she held her ground and didn’t easily forgive Nolan. While Debbie and Paul did still split up by the end of season four, it felt much less harsh and more… civil, than what we saw in the comics. It was a surprisingly mature take on a really messy situation.
To find Oliver, Debbie decided to leave Earth and journey to Talescria with Nolan. While Debbie is taking longer to trust Nolan than she did in the original comics, she is starting to let her guard down. Most likely, they will rekindle their relationship by the end of season 5.
What happened to Robot (Rudy/Rex) & Monster Girl?

In the Invincible season 4 finale, Cecil, Donald, and Sinclair tried to rescue Robot and Monster Girl from the Flaxan dimension, where they’d been stuck since episode 3, but their efforts weren’t successful.
The portal Sinclair created did connect to another dimension, but when a terrifying tentacled creature emerged, Robot and Monster Girl understood the task was too risky. Now, they have to figure out how to return home on their own.
While Monster Girl and Robot eventually make it home in the comic book version of the story, it’s still unclear how their journeys will play out in Invincible season 5.
