Is Absolute Batman Setting Up A Comic Book Version Of 1 Big DC Movie Storyline?

DC’s Absolute Universe is taking Batman on a very grim journey, and it could end up echoing a famous, yet controversial, DC movie. This new comic book series, which began in late 2024, creates an alternate reality powered by the energy of Darkseid, DC’s biggest villain. Overseen by Scott Snyder, the Absolute Universe reimagines all of DC’s heroes and villains, starting with the intense new take on Batman in *Absolute Batman*. As this universe builds towards an Absolute Justice League, a key question remains: how will it get there? Recent events, like Batman’s brutal fights with Bane and his use of the super-steroid Venom to enhance his physical strength, are turning him increasingly into someone resembling his enemy.

The way Batman is starting to resemble one of his greatest enemies could hint at how this new Justice League will come together. This storyline might share similarities with the plot of *Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice*. As Batman takes on characteristics of Bane, it suggests the events leading up to his encounters with Superman and Wonder Woman, the formation of the Justice League, and the overall narrative could mirror the stories told in *Batman v Superman* and *Zack Snyder’s Justice League*.

Batman Is Becoming Bane-ified (& That Could Put Him Into Conflict With Superman)

From the very start of this new universe, the Batman character has been noticeably more intense, determined, and aggressive. This has led some to question if *Absolute Batman* is too violent, but it’s clear he’s willing to use harsh methods. While he’s faced equally ruthless opponents like Absolute Bane, their conflicts – and Batman’s subsequent use of Bane’s strength-enhancing Venom – suggest he’s becoming even more extreme.

Given that Absolute Batman is already comfortable using brutal force, including an axe, his increasing reliance on Venom and transformation towards a Bane-like state could push him over the edge into becoming an unstable hero. A reckless, Bane-inspired Batman operating in Gotham is something the more principled Superman likely wouldn’t accept. Even with Absolute DC giving Superman a tougher edge, if Batman becomes a vigilante resembling Bane, Superman might view him as another overwhelming threat, similar to his enemy Ra’s al Ghul, and feel compelled to stop him. This situation echoes the conflict between Superman and Batman in *Batman v Superman*, and there might be further connections between them.

Could Wonder Woman Be a Mediator Between Batman & Superman?

Ever since DC launched its ‘Absolute Universe’ line, fans have been eager to see the different series connect and lead to an ‘Absolute Justice League’ team-up. That first major connection is happening in late 2025 with an encounter between Batman and Wonder Woman in issue #12 of ‘Absolute Wonder Woman’. While details are still under wraps, Batman is currently struggling with a descent into madness similar to Bane, which might worry Superman. Wonder Woman’s arrival could be a way to mediate the situation and bring balance to their dynamic.

In *Batman v Superman*, Bruce Wayne discovers Wonder Woman while he and Superman are clashing over how to best be heroes. Bruce’s investigation into Lex Luthor reveals the existence of other super-powered individuals, and Superman’s selfless act begins to change Bruce’s view of him – from enemy to potential ally. This ultimately inspires them to team up and form the Justice League, as seen in *Zack Snyder’s Justice League*. The upcoming *Absolute DC* may mirror this dynamic, but with a twist: Wonder Woman could help Batman avoid becoming consumed by darkness, while also helping Superman understand Batman’s true character, allowing them to build a strong partnership – the Trinity – and eventually, the Justice League.

Why Absolute DC Could Tell a Great Comic Book Equivalent to Batman v Superman & Zack Snyder’s Justice League

DC’s Absolute Universe consistently explores challenging themes and complex character motivations, pushing beyond typical superhero storytelling. It often examines the difficult choices heroes make and the unintended consequences of their actions – a hallmark of Zack Snyder’s approach, as seen in *Zack Snyder’s Justice League*, where heroes find strength in unity after facing hardship. The new Absolute Universe series, with its dark beginnings and focus on deconstructing classic heroes, seems to be aiming for a similar impactful outcome. And it’s particularly interesting that this story begins with Batman and Superman as rivals who eventually become allies – a surprising and compelling foundation for the series.

Similar to Zack Snyder’s DC movies, the Absolute Universe also features heroes who start out as isolated individuals, hesitant to work as a team. They’re slowly brought together not only by their heroic actions, but also by a growing awareness of the larger world around them. Essentially, Scott Snyder and DC’s Absolute team seem to be building this universe around the classic conflict and eventual partnership of Batman and Superman – the very foundation of the Justice League – but in a comic book setting where that kind of origin story feels natural. Each hero will have a unique background that fits within this framework. Zack Snyder’s *Justice League* film had a remarkable and influential journey to release, and the eventual payoff of seeing the League unite after so much personal struggle was worth the wait. DC’s Absolute Universe could be the place to explore that same type of origin story in comics – a world of hidden heroes, a rivalry between Batman and Superman, and their ultimate alliance as they form a team to protect the world.
