Google’s new Gemini 3 model is making a big impact in the field of artificial intelligence. It’s incredibly powerful, excelling in areas like problem-solving, speed, and handling images and videos. In fact, Gemini 3 is proving to be a strong competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, earning praise from tech leaders like Sam Altman and Elon Musk.
Even Marc Benioff, the CEO of Salesforce, said he planned to stop using ChatGPT after three years, switching to Gemini after only two hours of experience with it. However, Google faced criticism last week when a report by Malwarebytes revealed that it was using Gmail emails to train its Gemini AI model.
Google responded quickly, explaining that the user’s confusion stemmed from a misunderstanding of Gmail’s Smart Features. The news source that initially reported the issue has since corrected its story, acknowledging it had misinterpreted the situation.
Malwarebytes has updated an article because they unintentionally caused confusion about recent changes to how Gmail’s smart features are described and displayed.
A Google spokesperson told The Verge that reports about changes to user settings are inaccurate. They confirmed that Gmail Smart Features have been available for years and that content from Gmail is not used to improve their Gemini AI model.
Google’s description of the feature led many to believe it was using the content of Gmail emails to improve its AI. This wording caused a misunderstanding among a lot of users.
Gmail’s Smart Features tool helps protect you from spam, organizes your emails, and even offers writing assistance. Importantly, it’s turned off by default, giving you the choice to enable it and allow access to your email data, putting you in control of your privacy.
